I’m new to the state and garden zone. I was wanting to plant some hostas and lilies, but I was unsure when to put them in the ground here. If it changes anything I’m near New Egypt area. Thank you!

Do not plant hostas if you live in an area that has deer. Deer will eat the leaves and they don't grow back until the next year. They destroy mine every year. I usually wait until late April before planting anything in the ground.

My neighbor called hostas “deer candy”. Lillies can be planted now. I’m on the coast to your east and I’m going to put gladioli in as soon as I get the time.

Similarly, with the hosta and deer, if you have rabbits in your area, they will eventually eat the hosta once other foods are gone.

The rabbits by me love to destroy the asiatic lillies first, then move to the lirope. I use wire surrounds to keep them away as much as possible...

The rule is don't plant anything until after Mother's Day. With climate changing that could also be changing.
