I don’t object to this.

I can’t accept places like Asbury Park and Long Branch as central jersey. They’re not south jersey either. I’m okay w a shore area.

Why do New Jerseyans obsess over this? I used to live in CT which is geographically about the same size as NJ and people there are not arguing over geographic regions.

This issue with this is that half the shore isn't apart of the the "shore area". When people think of the shore a lot people think Wildwood, Avalon, Cape May.. yet they aren't in the shore areas.

I agree with this map except add coastal Atlantic and Cape May County to the Shore region. Not the whole county just the shore regions. Unless you have the Central Shore and Southern Shore areas

Honestly I feel like that’s the most accurate map I’ve seen yet. Maybe move the Central-South line a bit more North but other than that I think it encapsulates the regions pretty well

yourlicorceismine t1_isu2mi3 wrote

I don't disagree with this either. The only question I've got is what happens if someone mentions Sandy Hook or Highlands. Would you consider that "the shore"? I never really thought about it but I guess my answer would be no. Belmar? Wildwood? Monmouth Beach? Absolutely.

This actually looks similar too what the state police have, where Cherry Hill is in the central region.

I agree with this. If you live in Ocean Grove, you're not goin around tellin ppl u live in "Central Jersey."

NYRangers42 t1_isu9lde wrote

Love this map. Shore region should be every part of the coast that maintains a solid full time population (so basically everything not on a barrier island, i.e. Sandy Hook to Bay Head). Bay Head is the border of Shore and South. Also makes sense because the Coast Line ends in Bay Head, which has direct NYC service.

1

BobbyG-68 t1_isu9yvz wrote

Perfect! That’s New Jersey and it’s subdivisions!

2

notjustdrums t1_isu9zhp wrote

I disagree with this. In terms of cultural significance, the "central jersey" part of the shore is what ppl think of when they think of the "shore." Look up any stock photography of the "Jersey Shore," and most of the imagery is of the Ferris wheel @ Seaside Heights. The Jersey Shore reality show, unfortunately, had more impact than we'd all like. Cape May and all that is its own thing.

yeah to be honest i have absolutely no problem like this, the entire shore coast SHOULD be it's own territory. it's precisely why thousands of people flock there each summer after memorial day and stay until labor day. it's one of the best kept secrets about new jersey, let them keep calling us an armpit or wtf ever.

i've grown up in Freehold my entire life a stone's throw away from anything and everything and outside of maybe retired in Hawaii I don't think i'd rather be anywhere else in the world.

The question being asked here is "is the jersey shore distinct enough from the other regions enough to carve itself out?". I'm not sure, honestly. This map specifically does not do a very good job at delineating the regions, as half of the shore area of NJ is not included in the pic

TL/DR below

As someone from “Central” (in this map) Monmouth, I partially agree but have a major critique. The Shore shouldn’t stop in Ocean County, it needs to go all the way down to Cape May. However, I also feel that there’s a North Shore and South Shore.

This article shows the percentage of people who actually live in NJ who live there year-round. In Monmouth County, out of the 15 shore towns, 13 have over 80% year round residents, 11 over 85%, and 5 over 90%. Deal is the only one with less than 50%, being at 39%. These towns all essentially feel like Central NJ to me, but still generally have a distinct shore town feeling to them.Ocean County has only 5/12 over 80%, and all of them are north of LBI, ending in Seaside Park. The lowest is Beach Haven at 67%.

I believe this is where the distinction truly begins. Island Beach State Park is where things become more summer-only touristy. Once you get to Atlantic & Cape May, the further south you go the less people actually live there. In Atlantic, the highest is Atlantic City at 74%. 2 towns are below 50%. Then you get it Cape May, where only 2/9 towns have over 50%, the lowest being Avalon at only 28%. And mind you these are only based on ownership of housing by in-state residents, meaning that these numbers don’t necessarily reflect the actual amount of people who live there.

TL/DR: Based on this, I would argue that there’s a

North Shore - Monmouth east of the Route 35, Ocean east of the Garden State Parkway minus Island Beach State Park (even if it’s connected)

South Shore - IBSP + Atlantic (only the 5 towns on the Ocean) + all of Cape May.

TL/DR below

As someone from “Central” (in this map) Monmouth, I partially agree but have two major critiques. The Shore should be extended down to Cape May but split into North Shore/South Shore.

First:

This article shows the percentage of people who actually live in NJ who live there year-round. In Monmouth County, out of the 15 shore towns, 13 have over 80% year round residents, 11 over 85%, and 5 over 90%. Deal is the only one with less than 50%, being at 39%. These towns all essentially feel like Central NJ to me, feeling alive year-round and being highly connected to the rest of Monmouth but still generally have a distinct shore town feeling to them. I would go to Long Branch or Asbury Park any time of year. Ocean County has only 5/12 shore towns over 80%, and all of them are north of LBI, ending in Seaside Park.

Then you get it Cape May, where only 2/9 shore towns have over 50%, the lowest being Avalon at only 28%. The only town I would ever really consider going to outside the summer is Atlantic City, and maybe if there’s a famous restaurant that’s open year-round in say Wildwood or Cape May, but solely for that reason. These towns don’t really feel connected to anything else in their counties or in South Jersey. Hell 30 minutes outside AC you’re in the Pine Barrens.

Second:

As someone from Central Monmouth, I feel no relation to Camden or anything over there whatsoever. South Jersey is more influenced by the Philadelphia metro, while Central Jersey is generally more influenced by New York and Trenton. The line for Central Jersey needs to be moved up a lot higher. I’d argue Burlington is almost entirely South, and Ocean is Central but is South Jersey below Toms River.

I’m originally from North Jersey. I moved to Atlantic City four years ago, as I always dreamed of living at “The Shore”. When people ask me where I live, the first thing I say is: “I live at the shore” as I sit at my desk working while looking at the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and the beach. Then, I mention “Atlantic City”. But, THE SHORE is my first understanding of where I live. Sometimes, I say I live on Absecon Island when I remember that this indeed is an island. It’s like a much, much, much smaller island than Manhattan but still has an urban vibe with all the restaurants, music concerts and venues (did you country music fans make it to that awesome 3 day festival on the beach this summer?), and of course the casinos (I mainly visit them when family and friends are staying at them). I appreciate all the various Shore area variety in NJ. NJ is the BEST STATE! We have it all with minimal climate catastrophes.

1

Affectionate-Roof615 t1_it3c543 wrote

It really depends what specific towns are covered in the area. Toms River I would not consider “shore” although Lavallette for example is part of Toms River and is definitely shore. Also, why doesn’t the shore go all the way to Cape May? That is definitely shore territory.

Different people draw different maps of what they consider different areas to be. I never went further south than Island Beach State Park until I was in my 20’s (and still never been to Wildwood). So for me the shore map looks perfect, but I know it’s not all inclusive.

rant ends here
