I heard rumors of an earthquake... Was it just really crazy thunder?

I was sitting outside on my patio (rain calms me and there was no indication of storm to my knowledge) or I would have thought the same. The sky completely turned white and then there were three HUGE booms immediately after.

I am from Florida originally and this scared me. I’ve grown up with thunderstorms my whole life.

There was, apparently a powerful storm that brewed up near the Atlantic coast that prob brought that in.

I was waiting for the post.

Yeah I was laying in bed and saw a flash, then what seemed like a 10 second lead up to the peak of the thunder. Pretty cool

We had it IMMEDIATELY which is what sent me.

Thermal Inversion. Essentially a layer of warm air traps cold air below it acting like a lid in the atmosphere. This means that sound waves from thunder can’t escape which creates an echo chamber.

That’s interesting. And it would reach as far as exit 9 on the NJTP? Just wondering if it’s a geographic phenomenon.

The south is getting tons of tornados this month

North Jersey checking in, just some mild thunder and lightning up here, nothing crazy like you guys in central have been getting

No thunder at the Mercer/Burlington border. But we did have a heavy downpour a little while ago.

I was texting my local friends curious if they were hearing jt too…near Princeton there was a sustained rumble of thunder for almost a minute straight. Pretty wild. Eerie.

The thunder went on forever

Ewing, NJ here. Replayed the one rolling thunder on my buddy's doorbell cam and it was at least 20 seconds long. Happened at 8:53pm. Never heard anything like it, my wife and I were staring at each other with our mouths open, it was definitely the longest rolling thunder I've ever heard.

Also in north Jersey, in Morris County, and we had a HUGE boom of thunder and a brief power outage close to 9pm last night. Then it started pouring sheets of rain.

Huh. Well I guess a bit of distance makes a difference, I’m in Passaic County and we didn’t get anything like that

It was a good one, but I have felt for a while, that storms were worse when I was young.
