I hiked alone Egypt to Israel back in the day, as a female. It was like 2 days, but dayum that is a BIG trip he made. I am currently making my across the silk road, just waiting for the Azer/Amernian stuff to settle. I would never go into an unstable country during mass protests. I have been stuck in countries where protests have started for sure, but I stay in my hotel and keep informed. Silly backpacker.

Why was he in Iran? Was he going to swim across the gulf to Qatar?

I think westerners should be smart enough not to go to Iran anymore.

He must have been coming from Europe through the Caucuses, which would have also taken him dangerously close to Eastern Ukraine. Guess this guy isn't a big fan of the news.

From the article: " ...rights group Hengaw alleged he was arrested in the Kurdish city of Saqqez, the home town of Mahsa Amini, whose death in the hands of Iran's morality police has led to the fiercest protests in decades.

Mr Sanchez was arrested three weeks ago after visiting Amini's grave, a source told Hengaw."

There are a lot of countries I would love to visit in that part of the World just for the world history stuff, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria etc but I would never go because fuck all that shit

Both because of the extremists in the population and because the Governments in those places are just fucking nuts....your taking your life in your hands as a Westerner going to these places imo

And yeah....I get it, the vast majority of the people in these countries would be welcoming and kind but I'm not taking the risk of being beheaded, kidnapped or locked up as a political prisoner....would love to go for the culture and historical sites and "normal" people but nah....hard pass

Why does it have to be entitled? There is a long history of people walking and hiking places people like you and me don’t have the balls to go, let’s not confuse our weakness and jealousy for their entitlement

Right?

Look at fucking Qatar right now with those absolutely insane, Medieval requirements to vist the country....

Fuck all that man....and I've spent a couple months total over my 42y in Kuwait, and Dubai and Sharjah in the UAE and I have to say- I was a bit uncomfortable in those places in the Middle East simply because the Governments and rules are so fucking nutty, and some of the people can be openly hostile to western people (my personal experience in Kuwait)

There's a Yoruba saying that goes: when a little kid is well-fed, they'll start engaging in dangerous play. This guy sees a country in the middle of civil unrest and he decides "yeah, I'm going to cut across this country on my trek from Spain to Qatar".

I don't have balls so I can't speak to that, but I do have brains and I would like them to stay connected to the rest of my body so yea, no thanks. Not jealous that he's in jail in Iran and I don't think it's a sign of weakness that I have other people to consider when I go about my daily business and try to stay out of harm's way as much as possible.

Omg.....THE FOOD would be amazing in all those places

I was in Iraq for 2y as a civilian DoD Contractor (Construction) and the local food was amazing. Same in the UAE

I just wish these places were safer for Westerners, I would definitely spend my tourism dollars in these spots

The article implies that the fellow inmates he talked to got in touch with Kurdish media after their release and brought attention to his arrest, good on them if so.. hope he ends up ok, and best of luck to all the people of Iran

Iran is currently arresting or shooting anything that moves. No one should be going there that doesn't have to.
