As someone who has studied Cybercrime in my post grad, people who do this were likely abused themselves, which still doesn't make it right but it explains one of the reasons why some people are drawn to it. Others are from mental health issues or miswiring of the brain that leads them to this dark path.
Either way rehabilitation might be successful for someone like this dude, which is what we should go for instead of just punishment. He may need mental health services and possibly an advocate if he was abused himself. He is young enough for rehabilitation programs to work and get him back into society without becoming a threat - assuming he follows through on his end.
That's just my two cents.

I understand what you're saying, but every time someone correlates sexual abuse with abusing others it just furthers the stereotype that people that suffer SA, men in particular, will go on to abuse others.

I dont think its a stereotype when it’s true?
DFWPunk t1_iyhutsd wrote
It's only true if it's universal, and it's not. As an abuse victim I can tell you people assuming that the fact you were abused means you will commit abuse is infuriating.

I agree with you 100%. But the way stereotypes work, is that what is true in the macro is not true in the micro, but humans do the work that make the “true in the micro” part work for them.

And your evidence that it's true in the macro?

I did actually start researching, but then you get all these weird google warnings and banners (“there’s help!”) so gave up.
Point taken though. Anecdotal and media common != true, esp with these crimes where sensationalization plays a key role and constant anguish from reliving this shit.

We will not know anytime soon because it is too risky for someone to tell their therapist they like kids and it is too risky to try to advocate for research and treatment of said people. There are plenty of monsters who do it because but I'm sure most are like you said and have something different inside.

IIRC John Kitna was super religious, which makes this all less surprising to me somehow
