I don't know how long it's been since you've had one, but for decades the sugar coating had a sharp acrid taste (I am sure it was the coloring) and that is no longer the case. That taste, along with the grit, made them inedible to me but now I love them.

I’ve always enjoyed the yellow ones. Some of the other colors like pink always tasted off to me. A bit bitter.
