Alternative title: GPS based game doesn't match real life borders.
I can see why they didn't go for that.

Except that Pokémon go has region exclusive Pokémon and do care about borders.

Yes that's what this article is about, well done.

The article is about a Mexico specific Pokémon and the person lives in the US. The game does match real life borders.

Maybe you should read it. It's not very long:
>However, trainers quickly pointed out that Baroque1750 may live close enough to the US/Mexico border for the game to think they live in that region. “Most of the boundaries in the game are square blocks. The border is not a straight line. Southern California and southern parts of Texas may show as Mexico. Northern Mexico May show as USA.”

I’d be surprised if they coded in the entire border. Instead just go with an approximation radius.
Sounds like the article is just hype.
