You have to have your eyes open when you walk a dog in this city. All sorts of weird and crazy shit on the sidewalks that dogs will gulp down. Just today I had to steer my dog away from a pile of vomit and also chicken wings.

Isn't that park super iconic for being a junkie hangout, even before "our modern troubles"? If I were looking to find publicly discarded needles anywhere in Manhattan, Tompkins Square would be the first place I'd check.

Agreed. Sucks that things are everywhere, call 311 and report the extent of the issue if it's rampant. I've found needles before and I put them in a clean poop bag and drop them off at a doc office with a sharps container.

Dogs are not allowed in the grassy knoll part of the park, Fiorella, and you should obey the signs posted that state exactly that.

Not excusing the fact that her dog inadvertainly got ripped to the teats, but keep your dog on the walkways and in the dog park and it won't get high.

There was a homeless city there at one point. Before that it was really a shit hole, IIRC there was a sad, old bandshell there that was depressing to think how it must once have been a nice place. By the 90's when they built a playground and I started seeing baby carriages, it was obvious things were changing for the better.

Sad to hear it's sliding backwards again.

Hey poster,

I set the filter for “New” post and went back one week. This is the 10th crime post of a total 120+ post and that is simply way to much for to sub to handle.

Please consider posting pictures of the skyline in future. Thanks.

Hummus_ForAll t1_iuc0xn0 wrote

I’m starting to wonder if someone from the NY Post is just flooding this sub with their incendiary links. It’s like, we get it, NY Post makes money on telling New York what a shithole it’s turning into, but I agree and wish this sub wasn’t just a feed of the Post so much.

TheTeenageOldman t1_iuc3w24 wrote

I've seen needles in the grassy knoll, and while I don't think it's a major problem, I do think everyone should use caution and carefully examine the area they sit in. That's just a general rule for sitting anywhere in NYC.

It’s amazing that our fake-progressives in NYC want to normalized drug abuse, as if we lived in the 1800s (in the peak, as much as 1 out of 200 in the US was addicted to opium).

It’s hard to think of many policies that are more regressive than that.

Almost agree.

Humans should be compassionate to other humans & we should be implementing better systems to help the humans who have troubles but let’s fucking face it - HUMANS have a choice & make the CONSCIOUS DECISION to do the drugs that cause them these troubles - but “Karen’s doodle” & all the other innocent fucking creatures harmed by the humans disgusting behaviors, have NO CHOICE - they are helpless & live their lives dependent on us higher evolved beings - so, yes, some of us give a bunch of fucks for the sentient fuzzy muffins suffering at the hands of lazy fuckin druggies who can’t be bothered to at least clean up after themselves. This all coming from an addict currently in recovery.

You can fucking give a shit about the broken souls of the world while also noting that their choices are causing harm to others who don’t deserve it & want to help both groups.

Dumb.

They don't make money, at least not net. It's operated at a loss simply for the political benefit to the GOP. That's a big part of why they've never tried to push subscriptions... they want people there, even if it costs money.

Their owners make money indirectly from the various GOP grifts and shit economic policies.

“The Sherman Square area and its much bigger neighbor Verdi Square on the north side of 72nd were dubbed “Needle Park” in the 1960s and 1970s because of illicit drug activity. This provided the title and general setting for the 1966 book by James Mills and its 1971 film adaptation The Panic in Needle Park, directed by Jerry Schatzberg and starring Al Pacino in his second role.”

Wow. Addiction is a medical problem with a protocol of treatment. It's not a personality flaw. The national litigation against Purdue and the Sackler family laid bare how far some drug dealers are willing to go to get rich. And yes addiction hurts others. They hurt children. They impact local school and health care systems. It's actually tragic and we need to so a much better job treating people and caring for the people affected long term.

There's plenty of work on addiction that explains that. A story about a designer dog that shouldn't exist anyway stepping on a needle is so mind numbingly stupid. And it's an in your face reminder that rich, white transplants care less about the people who have the least health care resources to fix a problem that was directly targeted on them....then their stupid labradoodle.

I remember one day walking past some Chinpira in Yoyogi park doing stupid shit. The cops came up to them and were like, "Can you please stop?" and the reply was basically Fuck off, and the cops left.

But anyway, simply smoking pot in Tokyo runs the risk of ruining your entire life and career. So, there you go. I'm not sure it's relevant though.

Yep, the annual dog Halloween costume parade was there last week.

Massive event with hundreds of dogs and thousands of people - it was pretty much impossible to walk through because there were just so many people (ratio of like 100 people to every dog because of all the spectators)

Honestly I don’t even believe her.

Even if it’s true, she’s at fault for not watching her puppy. A city dog is much more likely to pick up and eat sugar-free gum or cooked chicken bone (both potentially fatal to dogs) than a bag of coke or weed.

Tokyo has worked hard to keep affordable housing alive. How do we encourage the types of people that leave their drugs on the ground to stay at home when housing is so expensive? The little dog on the left’s name is Biscuit 😍Honestly I live across the street from TSP with my dog and I notice some needles but no more than any other park in the city. We moved a few years ago from downtown Minneapolis and if you want to talk about a needle problem then travel there. I was washing my laundry at a laundromat across from my place and ended up with a USED needle in the pocket of my sweatshirt (nice neighborhood too). I can’t believe I’m saying this but parts of New York and the crime/ homeless population seem tame vs. where I was living before

Parks always been like that they cleaned it up a bit wasn't too bad but it's gotten bad again its funny though because a lot of transplants moved into that area when it was a little cleaned up so they never knew how bad that area of avenue A and B were back in 80s and 90s with the squatter riots and the shit that would go down in that park like the dude who killed his girlfriend and fed her to the homeless people in the park

All the more reason to support the expansion of Overdose Prevention Centers! If folks have a safe place to go they‘ll be less likely to use in parks! Even if you disagree with consuming drugs, these centers save lives, collect syringe litter and reduce public drug use. There are two OPCs open in NYC already and they are showing amazing results. I would highly recommend getting involved in advocating for more of them to be open!! :)

I take my dog there everyday. It’s my duty to watch where he goes and what he gets into. I’ll never be the type of person who values a pets life more than another person’s. People using drugs in the park need help not judgement. Also we live in the East Village which is historically a drug hub. It seems the neighborhood is reverting back to what it was in the past. I don’t enjoy the encounters I have in the streets with people using drugs, looking at their paraphernalia waste or the decrease in my quality of life in general. I may not live here much longer because the drug use is getting to me, but the tone of the folks in this article rubs me the wrong way.
