hot take:

h mart is overrated, overpriced.

Asian groceries with smelly seafood section and bunch of staff always putting shit up on shelf with no name but tons of asian ladies customers are far superior.

I’m not sure if it’s just because it’s brand new but the prices at this location are absurdly low rn, especially considering what’s going on at other local grocery stores in NYC these days. Same carton of milk is 4.99 at H mart vs 8.99 at the store on my block.

I don't live in the city anymore, but I feel like H-Mart in our area is on the higher side on pricing. For a lot of asian food, I can typically find a lower price at local places.

Family in Vancouver says it’s a straight up ripoff. They shop at a place called T&T and when I was there I saw that it was in fact awesome.

I knew I was gonna get downvoted lol.

All my asian friends who cooks much prefer Asian groceries owned by Asian families.

All my white friends love h mart and cant stop talking about the book.

Reddit loves to bash on corporates and chains but it comes to somwthing they enjoy they quickly turn a blind eye.

T&T is the Canadian Hmart. It's a chain store owned by Loblaw.

yeah agree, it's mainly overpriced. better going to chinatown. but I understand they are basically charging a convenience premium and have locations all over.

My Korean mother-in-law only goes to H-Mart if there's sales. She complains that it's too expensive otherwise. She usually goes to those smaller independent Asian groceries like you mentioned. She did go to the new one that opened in Astoria often when they had their grand opening sales though.

Someone is downvoting everything anti-H-mart in this thread. Let me reiterate, DO NOT GO TO H MART. THERE ARE PLENTY OF SMALL BUSINESSES THAT HAVE BETTER SELECTION AND BETTER PRICING

You can go to multiple places, you know. Certain markets are better for certain things. It's not some grand revelation that you've uncovered.
