Hi all, weird situation here. Took delivery of our new car on January 5 — paid 20k via personal check, put the rest on credit card
Fast forward to early Feb, and dealership still hasn’t cashed the check! I decide to do the right thing and call the dealer — told ‘em (honestly) that I waited till end of Jan in case they cashed checks end of month.
Dealer rep, super flustered as you can imagine, informs me that the check should have been cashed within 5-10 calendar days and says he’ll work with finance to figure out what’s happened. CC’s me on an internal email with the finance team — on that email, he attaches a screenshot of our internal profile for the car, everything shows as sold and I don’t see anything indicating outstanding payment, only a timeline of customer check-ins for sales/relationship purposes
Fast forward again to Mid-March, and they STILL haven’t cashed this bloody check! What the hell? It’s a very big dealership but 20k isn’t small change. My presumption is that they’ll catch it in an audit/review at some point this year, and I’m certainly not spending the money in the meantime — but is there a world in which they, just, don’t?
At any rate, I’m probably going to contact them this week as a final reminder, but part of me feels like I’ve done my job — both tendering payment and also reminding them of their failure to cash it.
I don’t want to be a shitty person but it’s hard not to have this morbid curiosity about how it will play out — and how much interest I might earn in the meantime. What would you do?
