Mortgage Company sent SSN/address to wrong email

Hello! My fiance and I are in the process of buying a house. We went with a popular company here in our hometown. My fiance has been doing the communicating and I haven't been getting any emails. We realized today that they have been sending all of the emails to the incorrect email. They called me today to make sure I would sign documents and they asked if what they had was my email... I corrected them and gave them the right email. MINUTES later they proceed to send an email to my fiance and the incorrect email again. This time, these documents had both of our social security numbers on the document as well as addresses. We were hoping the email they have been sending documents was invalid, but I emailed them and the email did not come back as invalid. Help. What can we do? Our information is compromised and I'm not sure what we can do, even maybe legally what our options are.

There is a breach somewhere here. Lenders aren’t allowed to send docs through email unless you have signed the electronic consent form. But the saving grace is that loan docs are usually encrypted and requires the last four of a social to open and sign them.

So chances are slim that your info is compromised. Check with your lender on how they were sent out.

Yeah, most of the documents have been encrypted, but today my fiance showed me the documents that were sent and they had our SSN and it was just attached to the email with no encryption.

And he didn’t have to put his social in to open it up?

Nope. He even forwarded me the email and I was able to see everything. I didn't have to do anything to see the documents. Whereas with previous documents I did have to confirm his identity to see those.

How did the lender get the email? Did you fill out an app online or did he just mistype?

So my fiance started the application, and he shared my email for me to complete the application. That email I did receive and I filled out the application. But after that the lender would directly send us emails and from then my email had been incorrect. So I'm not sure if she just copied my email wrong since I did get one correct email but it was automated.

Sorry, I saw that right after I replied last. It’s a major no no to for a lender to send a social security number in the open web. Chat with the lender about it and if you want, you can file a report with the DRE for your state if you feel compromised.

Chances are nothing will come of it, but I’m not going to advise you to ignore anything because a leaked social, birthdate and address is a pretty big deal.

Also, the person who sent the documents today with the sensitive information was someone who is assisting our lender too... so I'm not sure if that affects anything.
