That was my thought on the falling facade. Eventually, things fail, especially in those sorts of conditions.

Freeze/thaw cycles can damage stone if there’s water, since it’s the expansion of the ice that caused the damage (same thing that causes potholes). I think in this case it’s more likely that cold just makes metal brittle and more likely to crack (as noted in the article).
