So long story short I was heading out to dinner with my folks and as I stepped out the door there was a black cat just loitering around. I thought it would leave if we did not do anything for it. But when we came home it was still here. What should I do?

Take the car cat to any vet/shelter to see if it is chipped.

Most likely you have a cat now. Congratulations!

Edit: cat, not car. Take any mode of transport convenient for you.

Had exactly the same thing happen last winter. We have two cats and a dog and two kids . Black cat showed up at our back door and wanted to come in for three days. I put my foot down and said we are not getting another cat! His name is Gibson . We did put up posters checked for a chip and posted pictures on social media but no bites . We were chosen and that is that.

Take it to PAWS if you can't keep it

It's super cold out, bring him in tonight, keep him in a bathroom or other confined place and then think about it in the morning. I'd say don't take him to ACCT, they mean well but are always too full. Find a no kill shelter to take him. Also look on PawBoost for lost cats. And while I am not a cat person, and "say" I would never take one in, you may have been chosen - meaning you're now married to said cat.

Black cats are the coolest and very grateful. You two are lucky to have found each other. Bring him inside. Give him water.

If you want to take care of this cat first take it to be scanned for a microchip. Most any vet will do this for free.

If it’s unchipped or the owner has abandoned him/ her you can hold for 3 days to see if anyone comes forward. File a found report with ACCT. Then, if you’re keeping it- get it fixed asap. If not (and you’re concerned for his/ her safety) take them to ACCT for stray intake.

My mom has been anti-pets and especially anti-cats my whole life. When I told her I adopted a cat, the first thing she said was "I hope it's not a black cat." (It was.)

We bring him with us when we visit her because he travels well and gets sad being home by himself.

Fast forward a couple years, we need a cat sitter for 2 weeks. I propose bringing my cat to my mom so she can watch him. She proceeds to buy him toys and treats (of her own volition) and plays with him every night and lets him sleep at the foot of her bed.

There is hope for your parents :)

In situations like this you have no choice but to succumb to the cats desire to make you its servant

Yeah sounds like you’ve got a cat now. People don’t adopt or buy cats, they just show up one day. It’s how I ended up with mine.
