MAC won the battle but lost the war. MAC's policy was no fees for using ATMs. MAC became the most popular card. Then they were bought out by the big banks and that's why you now have fees for using an ATM.

But odds are your bank will charge you on their end for using another machine. Any time I don't visit my bank ATMs or take out cash when I shop I get hit coming and going, usually $2.95 from the owner of the ATM and $2.95 from my own bank. Nearly $6 a withdrawal. Shameful.

Lucky! I know there are plenty of banks out there that are graceful with their ATM fees, but not many.
