Calling all Burners

Hey Yinzers. So I will be attending the Frostburn festival (regional burning man held over presidents day weekend in Maryland) for 2023.

I have always wanted to attend burning man property and thought doing a regional burn would be a really good test run for the real thing. The problem is that I have ZERO idea what I am doing. I am an avid outdoorsman and I am proficient in camping (even winter camping) and all that jazz, but recognize that this might be a completely different beast to try to tackle. (For instance can I take a tear drop to camp in or is the access bag and I need to go hot tent with stove?)

The online community for frostburn sucks (no active sub and I don't use Facebook so that group in unavailable to me) so I am looking for reddit burners in Pittsburgh that have gone to Frostburn in the past or are going in 2023 that could share some insight as to anything I might need to know to come better prepared.

Hell, even if you've never been I dont mind having someone come along if you are willing to freeze to death with me if things go wrong

Howdy friend! I can help you get connected to the right people for sure. I'm friends with some of the organizers of Frostburn. I've never been because I prefer the warmer weather regionals. There is a designated area for RV parking. Never been to Frostburn but it’s this way at BM. Look at the Frostburn survival guide. They say RVs are allowed at FB buy there is no electrical, water or sewer hookup. Looks interesting.

FYI… it’s in WV at Marvin’s Mountaintop, not Maryland. Huge difference in climate and travel needs between these 2 locations.

I have many frostburn pals and unfortunately the facebook community is your best resource. it has been known to be rather warm some years, so be prepared for any type of weather.

I make that mistake constantly. And somebody always reminds me. It's West Virginia, not Maryland. But without fail. Next week I will make the exact same mistake.

Since you have been to burning Man, what are the vibes at the burns? And is there anything that particularly goes well for gifting?

I've camped in warm weather, but also below freezing and I'm looking forward to the challenge of what it might be this year.

And I feared that the Facebook group is probably the best resource, I just hate Facebook so much that I haven't caved and rejoined just for that group.

they use facebook so they can publicly vet people. burns are known for some illicit behaviors and they want to make sure no anti-burners show up. most of the people i know either take an rv or build a temporary structure onsite. one crew had a hot tub in 2019.

Vibe is just a free for all in a loving, giving community. Everyone helping everyone else be their happiest. I went over a decade ago. If you need something, people go out of their way to make it happen in the most unordinary, creative ways. With time, you get better at gifting but gifting in the desert might be different than gifting in a tundra. I handed out bandanas people could wrap around their face when in the desert but most people provide a service or some sort of feel good activity. Food, water and heat are always good gifts. If you play music or DJ, people dig that too. It’s just all about being one with the community and bringing whatever you want to the table. Quite liberating if you have a strong sense of self that must align with societal majority.
