I think it's great if companies feel AI like this is too risky. Meanwhile rapid advancement continues and free open source models will have capabilities far beyond anything the corporate world can offer.
That's really the best case scenario!

Are there currently any open-source ChatGPT equivalent programs? Ones that are up and running? I'm not aware of any. My understanding is that the training is too expensive which makes it cost-prohibitive.

I believe you are still correct. I think I saw the software is available but it's not pre-trained and it's still pretty expensive to train. But I'm betting that will change sooner than we think.
