Something tells me the Chinese version won’t be anywhere near as impressive as any of OpenAI’s projects, but it will be absolutely amazing at detecting dissent and spotting text written by Uighurs.

Are you saying they dont have English Data and cant scrape billions of pages from English content?

They did that 15 years ago and have been doing it ever since. With half a trillion dollars invested and the most smartest people in the world I can tell you they will compete and they will compete very bloody hard.

They want to show the world that they will be top dog for AI and you know who is going to help them? Westerners because they will hire the smartest people in the world.

They have pretty well stated they can't scrape English data, as it has too much Western bias for their liking. They may be able to filter it, but as we've seen with ChatGPT, it's not straightforward, and things will fall through the cracks. That makes life difficult for censors.

In domains where they have access to large volumes of data that doesn't need heavy curating (outside of text), they should be able to do fine.
