Thats just 2 screens mounted beside each other. Nothing really revolutionary.
And I think whether or not its a good idea depends a lot on the software. You can't treat it just as another monitor because it will be terrible for anything that isn't a static document. Even scrolling further down the document will be painful, this is why e-ink readers are only used for books, where the only animation is done when switching pages.
Also, some thoughts after reading the article.
They don't know if it is or isn't detachable, if its not detach able then its a stupid design, especially since the e-ink display must be charged separately, so it has its own battery.
A good idea would just be a nice e-ink tablet with good software integration so you could easily send documents to the device for easier reading. And connecting it to the monitor should just use a magnetic stand (on the tablet end) that connects to the Vesa bolt pattern on the monitor and, if that was adjustable could be used with any monitor.

i’m with you. it looks like a tablet strapped to a monitor…

They're even charged separately. They couldn't even be bothered to tether their power cords internally.

Is that for ready replacement?

Maybe but it's a lazy way to accomplish that. They could have had them tethered to the same main power and then had it split in the chassis and had a cord come out that plugs into the monitors for easy replacement. This has two entirely separate cords that require separate plugs.
