I hate when shows split the seasons between 2 years.

Just call it a different season already.

Do you think season 6 will come to Netflix this year? I don't feel like subscribing to another service just for one show.

I wonder if they will keep up their average of 0.5 rapes per episode this season too.

So 7A this summer, 7B 2024, and 8 in late 2024 maybe?

We fell off the show right after they arrived in America. Same with the books.

Much like Handmaid's last fall, I'm amazed that this isn't even their last season.

How is this show doing in the later seasons? Think I stopped when they were in France or something.. probably Season 2, i simply couldn’t find the time to continue

My favorite was when her daughter goes from Boston to Scotland, then back in time in Scotland, then takes a boat to the Americas, is reunited with her BF from present day who had his own terrible journey to the past, then is brutally raped by a guy that her parents had helped out earlier in the season, then gets pregnant with his kid. This happened in like 2 episodes.

Oh also, her BF that followed her back in time has almost as bad, if not worse, go of it. He goes back in time, joins a crew bound for the new world that is lead by the rapist mentioned above. Finds his girlfriend but then is forced to go back out on the ship with the rapist guy (he doesn't know this dude raped his GF). He escapes and makes his way to his GF's family's house only to be mistakenly identified as the rapist (he was unaware of the rape) and is beat nearly to death by his GF's father and left for dead. Then the Mohawk Indians capture his and hold him prisoner and take him hundreds of miles away. He escapes and finds time traveling stones but decides to stay in the past (wtf?) and is recaptured by the Mohawk where he watches another white guy get burned alive. His GF's family finally arrives to save him and take him home, where they finally notify him of the fact that his GF had been raped by his ship captain that he hated and has now given birth. Oh and the next season he is hung and nearly killed when he's falsely identified as someone else. Dude's life sucks.

Thank you.

I watch, or watched that show with my wife and I couldn’t handle how every second or third episode somebody had to have something absolutely horrifying happen to them and be powerless to stop it. And how is it almost always rape? That show is like a nonstop trigger warning.

My mom and stepdad used to listen to the audiobooks for this series every day, even while I trapped in the car with them. I was an elementary schooler and it was the 90’s, so I didn’t have my own music to block it out either. I’m pretty sure I’ve still got some emotional damage hanging around from all the rapes in these stories.

This show is bananas. A very significant percentage of the main cast has been raped. Women get raped, men get raped, children get raped, it happens several times each season. I stopped following the show because at some point it's just too much, and apparently I missed a huge gang rape scene in the Season 5 finale? Thank god.

I had to stop watching this in the first season. It’s just rape porn. No thanks.

Vandergrif t1_jdezd81 wrote

Honestly the first season was borderline torture porn for a solid chunk of it, it actually cleared up quite a bit after that - which is really saying something because again, still a surprisingly large amount of rape.

Fanfrenhag t1_jdf4yni wrote

People love to speak of this show as rape and torture porn in such a hackneyed manner, without recognising anything of merit about it. I's rivalled only by The Handmaid's Tale

I find this puzzling because the worst, most impossible-to-watch torture porn I have ever seen is in a show I otherwise love - season 2 of Vikings Valhalla. They literally linger lovingly and gratuitously over torture details...but strangely, nobody ever mentions it

meatball77 t1_jdf6jz4 wrote

Oh, but she had sex with the boyfriend and then the rapist within days so it was just maybe a rapist baby.

Later they find a birthmark and decide that it must be the now husband's baby. Then they for some reason decide to stay in the past instead of going someplace where there is hygene and indoor plumbing.

I enjoy the show, but it needs more time travel.

Also, it annoys the fuck out of me that they settled right in the middle of what Claire knows will become a war zone in the near future.

meatball77 t1_jdf6wf3 wrote

That's where the series should have ended, or even better right after she travels back and meets Jamie in the bookshop (then give us a sex filled epilogue where they live happily ever after).

Then it basically becomes fan fiction of iteself. The author should have done a spinoff where the daughter while trying to go see her mother ends up traveling back way to far and meets a Viking.

Show hasn't been good since they arrived in America... but I've watched from the start so I'll see it through. Even though I don't believe they'll stick the landing, ending a couple seasons before the books will.

SlouchyGuy t1_jdgr9jc wrote

I was recommended the series, but then I looked into it and saw the number of books, I'm glad I did. Horrifically overstuffed unending series is the reason I don't any long series anymore, only those that have episodic books, each with an ending.

meatball77 t1_jdhc2nj wrote

I've become a big fan of romance series where each book in the series has new characters and maybe there's a bit of a story that continues. I'm ten books into a romance series right now and it feels fresh because I get new characters each time. So many writers essentially end up writing their own fanfiction when they can't end their stories.

wickedly_santa t1_jdhgm4l wrote

I’m glad this is a reaction I’m seeing to this show - we can never get through a rewatch because of how the misery outweighs the joy by a huge factor. For an adventure romance it’s mostly about trauma, rape, and murder and I think the showrunners might be a bit psychopathic.

My wife loved the show in the early seasons but lost interest after season 3 (once the leads got together and she didn’t like the new younger couple). I finished season 5 but didn’t watch the latest season. I do plan to catch up eventually but I’m not in a hurry to do so either

Claire even offered to give her an abortion if she wanted to (a DIY one but I mean she literally managed to perform complex surgeries and singlehandedly invented penicillin, so by the show's logic it would have worked and been perfectly safe) but Brianna refused because abortion is bad I guess 🤷‍♀️

And, yeah, she could have at least gone back to the 20th century so she could give birth without a massive risk of death, but nope.

no_name_left_to_give t1_jdibszd wrote

The show really didn't adapt how all the characters are deeply religious in the books. Bree is a practicing catholic who grew up in 50s/60s Boston, of course she'd think that abortion is bad.

I never said that although plenty of people do, which must quite stressful for you lol

People are free to use whatever words they wish to provided they are not downright offensive (and I'm pretty sure somebody saying they don't get something is not in that category)

IndyRevolution t1_jdjx2gy wrote

No, but you're saying "Oh, people just miss the deeper themes" whereas I'm saying that it's a moot point when the show is such a clusterfuck of abandoned plotlines and characters that nothing has its intended effect. It's not deep.

1

Fanfrenhag t1_jdklf8v wrote

Did not say that either

You love to put words into people's mouths and attempting any kind of convo under those conditions is more trouble than its worth

My best advice for you is to simply not watch it if you don't like it and stop obsessing over whether or not others agree with you
