The reason I want to talk about Insatiable is because of Wednesday. A lot of people told me to watch Wednesday and after weeks of listening about how good it is I watched it and didn't see the appeal at all. It's not a bad show but I can't understand at all why it got so viral. I think Wednesday as a character work with a small child because then it gives that fun mix between the cuteness and innocence of a child and the cold calculating creepiness of a psychopath. But when a soon to be adult teenager tries to does it, it just felt to me like a Daria knock off... And the atmosphere of everything is generally dark so the contrast of Wednesday and the rest of the world is not there...
For all those reasons it reminded me of a show that went totally under the radar and that I liked way better. Insatiable. I'll say right off the bat that Insatiable is not a masterpiece either. Is not that funny to be a comedy and it has some issues but if a show like Wednesday that I would say is right at the same level blew up like that then I think Insatiable definitely deserves some attention.
Insatiable is the story of Patty Bladel played by Debby Ryan (Kudos to casting, perfect choice). The show tells the story of a girl that used to be fat and after an accident loses 70 pounds and is suddenly a really attractive. It's a little like Mean Girls, unpopular girl suddenly gets really popular and it goes up to her head. Just like Wednesday, is the story of an evil individual navigating High School and Bullying and stuff. But there the similarities stop, Interestingly enough both characters are like solar opposites of evil (I wouldn't even say Wednesday is evil, just like way too edgy). While Wednesday is cold, logical and savvy, loyal to her close ones, and really honest as she is true to herself and doesn't cares what others think. Patty is way to sensitive, impulsive, very manipulative and an ego maniac who wants everyone and everything to herself.
The story of Insatiable is then her going way over her head. I think many people got the wrong take about the show. They seem to think is a show about body positivity, love one self and unrealistic beauty standards and how this may affect many people's self image. And yeah, the show those tackle all of this issues as they are key themes of the show, but I think the show is about pride, and ego. Patty had to be fat and be neglected so that that once she gets pretty, all the attention she gets felt like a sugar rush. She is then at core a very insecure girl that really is affected by everyone's opinions but that is constantly getting reinforcement about how hot she is so she doesn't have to work on her self esteem issues. But as a result she can't get enough attention, she is insatiable. It's very clear from the beginning that she has a problem with addiction and obsessive behavior, once with food and then with compliments. As a result you get this very deep character with irrational dynamics, where she secretly feels that everybody is using her so she needs constant ego reinforcement but at the same time she falls immediately for everybody who makes her feel pretty and special. The whole show is her seeking this feeling and doing what it takes to get it. On top of it all she is a very impulsive person and doesn't really think things thought so she ends up doing really fucked up shit throughout both seasons.
As I said, the show does have some issues. The cast is centered around three main families and the family dynamics are way too complicated and convoluted way more than it needs to be. It's not hard to keep track of but eventually there are too many elements at hand and among the 5+ subplots, many of them are very expendable. As a second issue, to be a comedy, the shows is not really funny, is not the kind of show you really laugh watching. The comedy is more situational, about the different set of circumstances that happen but the jokes aren't actually funny (very entertaining tho). The show knows how serious to take itself and that is great, it gets very satirical and is not afraid of shifting tones and doing absurd over the top things.
I really recommend this show.
