My parents liked Death Note too. They love crime stuff and whodunnits so I figured they would. It helps that aside from the shinigami and notebook it's a pretty grounded anime and lacks the more obnoxious anime tropes like fanservice and panty shots and doesn't have much in the way of weird or forced humour.

My Mum even yelled out "Noooo!" at one plot point early on.
