I'll be heading up to St. Johnsbury for a few days to visit a friend. What are some fun interesting things to do around the area or nearby towns? I'll be only seeing him for one day and would like to do something instead of just sit in the hotel all day.

Boule Bakery has great coffee and baked goods.

The fairbanks museum is pretty underwhelming if you are an adult. If you are 8 years old it is the best thing ever. So choose wisely.

I keep hearing people say Whirligig Brewing is very good, but I've never managed to be there when it is open.

Schilling Brewery in nearby Littleton NH has excellent European style beers that are rare to find in the US. Great views from their patio in good weather, and the food is good.

Fairbanks Museum, Atheneum, Dog Mountain (if you need to cry), History & Heritage Center, Mt. Pleasant Cemetary. If you're thirsty, Red Barn (Danville), St. J Distillery, Whirligig, Schilling (Littleton). Stock up on cheap(er) liquor in NH, that's what the locals do for fun.

I lived in st Johnsbury for 4 years I just moved. There's not a whole lot but there's some things. Fair banks museum, gold crown lanes bowling alley, there's a couple bars. The strip on Railroad street past the big bridge has a few places. there's a bakery that makes fresh bread, boxcar and caboose - book and toy store, moose river lake and lodge - they sell expensive outdoorsy clothes and knickknacks like canes and wooden boxes and they have a jewelry store too and all kinds of stuff. There's 3 thrift shops, some resturants and fast food. Littleton is a 20-30 minute drive away into NH and has a bunch more. Theres more resturants and stores and you can walk on main street it's a beautiful old town there's a covered bridge next to an old mill thats now a pizza place and bar I believe. There's a movie theater a bunch of food places, There's a weird shop on called Aylakai that has all kinds spiritual stuff jewelry and clothes and a basement with smoking accessories and sex toy stuff. I'm sure I've missed a bunch but I don't wanna list things all day.

Boule Bakery is a must for pastries and coffee. Cosmic Cup is a good lunch spot. Haven is a nice vintage furniture store and there is a decent bookstore. Whirligig does have some cans to go but not nearly the selection they have on tap. Littleton is a little more happening… but if you’re looking for a whole day or most of it, I highly recommend Montpelier. It’s an hour away, a really easy drive down 2 and is a great spot to spend a whole day.

Same as Rutland, same as Barre, etc. Know why? Because the County Courthouse is smack downtown. What does that mean? That's where the criminals live because their license is taken away. The legal infrastructure grows downtown and local landlords resist investing in their properties - residential and commercial - because criminals trash them. It's a losing system.
