I'm in the SE United States, and mosquitos are a menace, but we still hike and fish and whatnot, slathered in repellent. I understand the blackflies in VT are otherworldly. What are opinions on bringing kids in early June? Grin and bear it with repellent, or wait until later in the summer?

Yes, I know it's only October right now, but we're compulsive planners.

Good for you (planning ahead) and being knowledgeable about the location you are going to.

Me? I would plan an outdoor vacation in Vermont between Father’s Day and Oct 15. (Wear fluorescent orange hats after Sept 1 though.)

It might be fine, just bring head nets and hats for everybody and dress in long sleeves and pants.

If you’re stationary for any amount of time, they’ll fly up your nose and into your eyes. Repellent does very little to deter them. If you’re moving or there is a breeze you’ll be fine. Bring head nets and long sleeve/pants just in case.

Definitely bring the kids so they can attract the flies away from you, leaving you free to roam the hills unbitten, sipping on Vermont beer.

The flies can be annoying; the ticks are the real problem.

Unlike the mosquitoes the black flies can’t bite through clothing. Even if they’re absolutely horrible like everyone else said a bug net and long sleeves will stop them. If June is the only time you all can visit definitely don’t let the flies deter you.
