When I was a kid, my dad and I were driving in the California desert heading to the Palomar observatory. On an empty highway completely without warning our car was blasted by a low flying F-16 that had snuck up on us from behind. I was instantly under the dashboard and my dad was shrunk in his chair shouting expletives (being a commercial pilot he was super pissed) It was the biggest "jump scare" I've ever experienced.

My grandparents had a lake house, water front. One day a pair of jets were flying 'low' over the lake and looked like they were coming directly at the house. For some reason I thought they were going to crash into the house! In reality they were probably 1000 feet or more.

Pretty common move from air forces around the world. The car must have wandered where it shouldn't (near a military base or active patrol zone) and it's a harmless way of making a signal and clear warning.

For example during french operation in Africa it was common for Mirage 2000 pilots to fly full gaz just above militants that got a bit too agressive towards ground forces (agressive meaning starting shooting, and wouldn't let go just by normal exchanges of fires). Most of the time they will just shit themselves and leave.

It could also be a dick move from bored pilots.

Don't need to go supersonic with an F-16 to make an unholy mess of someone's pants. Also, certain flight authorities seriously frown upon going supersonic except in designated areas...

Way back in time a pilot that was doing his 'checkout' flight(last before his term was over) here in Norway, did a low-level over the base(just a smidge off the approved path), and went vertical with full afterburner above one building.

'Unholy hell' is one description I've heard from one of the guys in that building...

To be fair, assuming you made an honest mistake and get actually lost, ending up driving down a military road...I don't think having a fighter jet kick up dust is explaining the circumstances very well....

Just seems like a helicopter or jeep with megaphone telling you to turn around might get the message across in a less panic inducing way

Siellus t1_j7p1dfz wrote

Because shorts are fucking garbage - they're objectively inferior in every single way.

They're made for devices with less detail control, so no video seeking, no audio control, limited video real estate.

They're made for the sake of the "try to make you swipe for hours and hours" algorithm.

And the single worst thing about them - They're forced on me, I can't avoid them - I try to hide them on youtube but that only "temporarily" hides them from the front page. The youtubers I generally follow now spam shitty shorts too and reddit doesn't let me filter out all youtube shorts.

Shorts, tiktok - all that shit can go burn,

I worked near Heathrow, and every day you could hear the amazing sound as Concorde took off at about 11.00am. The engine roar would fade, and all that was left was the wailing of car alarms, from cars parked nearby. The raw power of that plane was incredible.

Itā€™s always military (blackhawks) or coast guard (also blackhawks)

It's literally just a model right now. Usually takes a bit longer than that to develop an aircraft, test parts, get manufacturing set up, get it approved/qualified by the FAA, then sell it. Not to mention how many companies and "idea" planes pop up already.

Unfortunately, without an engine or half-way working prototype, they haven't really even taken the first steps in development, at least not the challenging ones. If they already had made progress, I'd say they have a chance, but it's still way too early to have any hope.

Pretty much anything that involves approaching a military facility you shouldn't, especially if they have active training at that time. That's better than how some places handle it. You get one warning to turn around, if you keep approaching they open fire until you're neutralized. IIRC, it happened at the NSA entrance years ago, two dealers didn't read the signs towards the entrance (it's very clear it's a restricted area) and panicked.

MotoRandom t1_j7pzdw6 wrote

>If they don't understand why it happened why would they leave.

If you're confused when a military aircraft buzzes you in a restricted area, you shouldn't be driving. The reality is the military doesn't care if you understand or not, that's not important. Their job is to keep random people off restricted areas, if you can't tell someone wants your attention when you're repeatedly buzzed by aircraft, that's on you. This is commonplace in secure areas. Just look up what happened at the NSA entrance on the east coast when two dealers took the wrong turn. Same would happen at any other restricted area.

They have a lot more to lose by not keeping the place secure.

How the fuck do you get that logic from what I said?! Do you think the pilot cares if you know if you're there or not? Cos they sure as shit don't. You know what a lot of people do when they panic? Turn tail and run away. It's an innate response. Sure, some clam up. But a lot don't and will do everything to remove themselves from the situation. Think about it, would they do this if it wasn't effective?

And who gives a fuck if you knew what happened or not? You'd bug the fuck out of their as quick as you could. You wouldn't be hanging around to find out if it happens a second time. It's like being in an unfamiliar part of town and hearing something out of the ordinary. You don't hang around, you get out of there asap. This is that turned to 14. Got hit with a killer "sneak-up" flyover from a distant air show. We were at a pier on a beach looking at the air show going on miles away across the water. The planes would come out over the lake, but never closer than maybe a half-mile or so. Suddenly a jet comes from the land side of our view (behind us) and the sound blasted us all at once. Entire pier of people were jump-scared by that one.

waterboysh t1_j7qrga4 wrote

I went to Pensacola for college, which is the home of the Blue Angels. You can often see them practicing from the beach. When they are going fast and heading straight towards you... you don't hear them until they are right on top of you or even past you. It's terrifying because they are super loud too. It's amazing how something that loud can be so sneaky.

2

madman1969 t1_j7s8g5n wrote

Dad was in the RAF and we lived on various bases my entire childhood.

In that entire time nothing was as loud as watching a Vulcan flypast at an airshow in the mid-70's. I remember a can of Coke resting on top of the car being shuffled across the roof as it flew by.

2

somebodyelse22 t1_j7sal4t wrote

I'm envious of you. I never saw a Vulcan, but fell in love with them when I saw a documentary about how Vulcans were used in the bombing of the Falkland Islands. So audacious to use moth-balled aircraft for one last mission, to fly half-way round the world as a reminder that even mainland South America could be targeted if needed. Old technology that still carried an unexpected punch.

If you've not seen it, highly recommend the following documentary about the story of Vulcans going to war. https://youtu.be/D3ZdOo9dtC8
