I can tell you that keeping your own coop isn't that much work if you do your research and plan well. I started mine last spring and never looked back.
Now I have to unload my extras to friends and family just to avoid them piling up.

Why's it sad? Periodic floods are necessary to create, replenish and evolve alluvial deposits all along river channels.
It's just nature doing its thing. The bar will be back soon enough.

Barely in Lehigh. I grew up close to there. It's just a quick hike in State Game Lands off a dirt road crossing from Heidelberg Twp., Lehigh County to East Penn Two., Carbon County
It's that visible, slightly higher, spot on Blue Mountain between the Lehigh Tunnel and Route 309.

I live in the Poconos but work in Bucks County and red oaks are dying in the Lehigh Valley and Philly metro areas in addition to white and chestnut oaks.
I think that the higher elevations and generally cooler, somewhat less humid climate is delaying red oak decline in the Poconos but who knows for how much longer.

Reply to Pa. drillers abandoned thousands of natural gas wells in 5 years, ignored state law, report says by lildobe
The logging companies stripped the forests bare back in the day eroding mountainsides and creating flash floods.
The anthracite and bituminous coal companies left the land scarred by culm banks, subsiding tunnels, old strip mines and creeks filled with mine drainage.
The western PA oil industry left abandoned wells behind.
The concrete and slate industries in the Lehigh Valley left water-filled quarries everywhere.
The defunct steel companies and railroads leaving abandoned structures and contaminated soil behind around their mills and railyards.
This state's politicians never stopped any of them from doing what they did, why would Harrisburg stop the gas companies now?
Answer: Money's 200+ years experience do the talking in our state's politics, that's why.

Reply to May buy a house in Broadheadsville, PA. Curious on some thoughts from anyone local there. by [deleted]
I live in Pleasant Valley S.D. but not in Brodheadsville/Chestnuthill Twp. itself.
I've lived in the Lehigh Valley and Bucks County before moving here so my comparisons are in relation to those places.
If you want a house of your own in a somewhat suburban/country area and want to be left alone doing your own thing in an area without much sense of community then this place is for you. Houses here are certainly more affordable than comparable homes in places further south and east.
But school real estate taxes are high here and go up every year. The school board is kind of goofy and the administration is uninspiring from what I hear.
Also you're driving a decent way to get anywhere significant and in the winter the local Monroe County PennDOT maintenance district does a truly crappy job of even clearing major roads like 209.
But overall, I like the area because I have a much nicer house here than most other places I could've lived instead. And since I don't look for much in the way of community resources/municipal services, the area works for me
However try to avoid Kunkletown itself and areas just south and east from there though. That area nearer the mountain is, um, interesting, lol.
Good luck!

Well, I've lived in various parts of Pennsyltucky my entire life and if you're from the NYC metro and like the culture, diversity, and fun aspects of living there, you're not likely going to have a good time out here.
I now live where the New Yorkified Poconos sort of transitions into the rest of NEPA and think maybe you'd like the Stroudsburg-Milford-Hawley-Honesdale corridor. Also the Mount Pocono area might be a consideration.

Based on how you worded things, I'd say you'd ultimately be happier seeking employment in NY where you already are.

Spent some time up your way and that sure sounds about right.
I'm on a surprising cold hilltop considering it's not Northern Tier here in the western Poconos with a woodstove and endless free firewood all over so splitting wood year-round is a thing.

Well, it's disappointing but I grew up in just such a place and I long since learned to keep my distance and keep my politics to myself.
My neighbors seem to like me and will help me when I need it as I would for them.

Well, I've long since gotten used to ignoring the Trump signs and flags and focusing on my wood splitting for the stove, my gardens, chicken coop and apple trees instead.
Also I enjoy all the wildlife I have here.
It's a worthwhile tradeoff for me

Never been that far west - only got as far as McKean County.
But it looks like a cool geographical location and I really like snow and cold gray winters (yeah, I'm weird, I know) so I'd probably like it there.

Bethlehem line just ain't happening.
- Perkasie Tunnel represents one big problem.
- The popular Saucony and Upper Bucks rail trails now occupy a lot of it.
Plus the already-mentioned usual electrification, missing stations, and major track upgrade issues, etc.

Pretty solid work in the eastern part for sure. I live in the Poconos, work in the Philly metro area and grew up in the Lehigh Valley.
I agree with all three though an argument could be made to shift Carbon County into the Poconos as more of it's more that than true Coal Region.

You'll be in Forks Township to the north which has mostly newer developments or Palmer Township to the west which contains most of Easton's somewhat older suburbs.
If you go further north you'll be in Lower Mount Bethel Township which is more rural.
