Of course the Spanish food doesn't suck, it's mostly pretty great. It's just that it's not that interesting to talk about compared to the latest global food that drops in like a Thai or French or whatever. Plus they tend to be down scale. It gave me a huge sad when basically all of the cheap Spanish places exited Downtown.

My favorite currently is Ricky's on Franklin Street, huge portions of Pernil w rice and beans!

Don't forget that living somewhere in Queens will save you $5,000 a year in tunnel tolls and gas getting to LIC. Not to mention the years taken off your life by sitting in traffic.

The only other viable plan is to do what my wife did when we lived on the upper west side and she needed a car to drive around Staten Island where she worked. She left the car there on Staten Island and commuted by public 5 days a week bringing the car home on the weekend. I have a client who works in LIC and lives in Journal Square. He doesn't mind his commute, it's actually only about an hour door to door.

I guess my reading comprehension is better than the previous commenters, and you're asking about literally where to find the listings rather than which neighborhood to look at!

The easiest is to go to Zillow, which is the same company as HotPads and Trulia, and shares all their listings together. I would be surprised if there's anyone that lists on Facebook or apartments.com that doesn't also list on Zillow.

I was only including community oriented activities, not businesses like the kayak school or jetski rental there. But that raises an interesting question, is there a master list anywhere of nonprofit clubs and volunteer organizations in the area? That would be a handy thing to add to our FAQ.

I'm going to assume you didn't just crawl out from under a rock and know the things that can be done in any city, like drinking, adult ed classes, listening to or making music, and team sports. So I'll mention one fairly unique to JC/Hudson county that doesn't occur to many: boating. We live on a peninsula and have some opportunities to get out there when the weather is nicer than it is now. There's kayak boathouses in Hoboken and Laurel Hill Park, and there's marinas where racing sailors are always looking for a strong hand to help crew, and there's some sailing ed programs.

Another thing is religious oriented young people's groups. When we moved here the "Young Leadership" group at the Hoboken Synagogue was very active, going out after services on Fridays and having events. Many marriages were made there. No doubt other denominations have their own equivalent.

We can post pics in the threads, yay!!!

As others have said, get outside DT and it's not a problem. I've invested in the Heights so I'm biased, but my young tenants love it there in their <$2k 2BRs. Not only do you have a lot of great stuff going on along Central and Palisade, and great access to the City and DT, but to Hoboken as well via the Congress St elevator or 100 Steps. Your only problem will be renting parking if you aren't ready for street parking.

Guess you never went to engineering school. I didn't either but I've been around reality a while. These buildings were not designed to carry a massive side load like those cables simply attached to their middles. Cables are always terminated at the ground on an angle so the tower load is mostly vertical, not sideways. And it would need to be far higher than the 25th floor, it needs 230 ft clearance in the middle, and the cables sag.

Not to mention these are private properties that might not take kindly to your brilliant idea.

Not your fault, it's just the repetitiveness of these inquiries. If I had some GIS tech skills I'd make a map with links to all the threads inquiring about every specific neighborhood. I raised my kids a few blocks away from there, we all lived!

Check out the new resident faq if you haven't already.

I'd say excepting the Mongolian chicken, the best thing they make is fried wings. Another thing I like there, that is supposed to be bland, is roast pork and bean sprouts. It's a kind of childhood comfort food thing.

This kind of competition is what makes King Szechuan stand out as being pretty damn good.

The spicy dishes I get from there are reasonably hot, the triple pepper chicken is way hot. Some places sure are variable though, Fortune makes a sometimes great mongolian chicken. Sometimes they put in enough of whatever sour paste makes it tasty, sometimes it's bland, total crapshoot. I've tried saying "strong flavor!!" when I order, no go.

At least King Szechuan is pretty authentic, I once got Kung Pao on the road that was 'brown sauce #1" with half a bottle of Red Hot tossed in, I swear it was orange.

OP, did YOU vote in the board elections? That would put you in the minority of JCitizens.

The whole BOE system is a disaster. Every time someone with real ability and experience has run they've been defeated by Teacher Union neophytes. Corporations put people with real business experience on their Boards of Directors, we put college kids and housewives on a board controlling a $1B budget. And then we're shocked it's a mess!

The people saying we need to pay the teachers more don't know what they're talking about. Go to the NJ dept of ed and look at the stats. We pay better than like 85% of the 93 comparable large districts.

I"ve actually had a bagel with sliced turkey and homemade cranberry sauce! I put a lot of things on bagels as I usually have them (from Hoboken Hot Bagels) in the freezer. Meatloaf with ketchup and raw onions is a good one also. I'd totally put our home smoked BBQ pulled turkey on one, but the wife usually buys sub rolls.

The tough it out way is obviously up Palisade. But if you work it, there's other less traveled N-S streets between Palisade and Central like Oakland and Sherman. There's a patch of discontinuous road mess between Prospect & Ferry that would require some navigation, but past that it's simple.
