Yep, one should not expect hifi quality from these, but they do the job just fine, and this formfactor is the only one I found to work well in bed. On/over ears for obvious reasons raised by OP, iems would still be protruding and making your ears uncomfortable.

Would humbly suggest the cheapest hphones for sleep, like These Musicozies. Good enough for movies, and you can actually lay on the side with these. Am using these for audiobooks in bed myself after the in-ears ruined my ears (

Just broke mine while putting these on my not enormously large head - that headband is not designed to last! But otherwise very capable headphones in their price range, so agree in full with your pitch.
