Some companies will only hire contractors for certain positions. Some of those contractors will be at those companies for years as a contractor.

Are you w-2 employee of the firm that has you contracted to the company or are you 1099? Do you have any benefits such as vacation, holiday, or sick pay? 401k match? Life, health, dental insurance that you don't pay 100% of the cost for?

I worked as an IT consultant many, many years ago. I got paid 80% of bill rate. 7.65% went directly to the company side of FICA. The company had to pay for my workman's comp and unemployment insurance. So, when all was said and done, they got a small, but fair, percentage of my wages. My consulting company had an office and at least 3 staff members. They had costs and profit to meet, so it was an equitable arrangement. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone offering 80% of bill rate these days.

The idea that your recruiter makes 30k a year off you is absurd. The recruiter's company may, but the recruiter himself doesn't. Also, the recruiting company has costs too. They aren't a charity.

Your options are:

  1. Become an employee of the company you are working at. However, they are also going to make a profit off you, otherwise why would they be in business?

  2. Go somewhere else with a higher bill rate.

  3. Talk to the company you contract through and ask for a raise.

  4. Find another consulting firm, which will require you work elsewhere.

I know you're mocking, but the truth is that a lot of people don't use the turn signal correctly. Many just don't use it because they're assholes, but that's another story for another day.

Also, there are people who don't wash their hands after using the restroom. The majority of people do not properly wash their hands.

Let's make it easier. The turn signal goes on BEFORE you ever slow down. The signal is to SIGNAL that you are changing course (including speed).

While we are at it, if there is a continuous center turn lane, you put your turn signal on before moving to that center lane and you decrease speed only after your entire vehicle is in that center turn lane (this assumes there isn't another vehicle in that lane that would make this not reasonable).

What OP is discussing (among other things) is called "bit rot" (among other terms). Just powering them up periodically for magnetic media isn't the complete solution. You need to read and re-write the data. In the old days, there was a product called Spinrite that basically would read and re-write data and would try to recover missing data by re-reading the media many times.

For SSDs, they need power periodically to maintain the electrical charge.

Cds, DVDs, and blu-ray don't have either of the magnetic or electrical issues, but still can physically decay over many, many years.

The backup mantra is "two is one, one is none" when it comes to copies of data. Of course the same people who preach it don't necessarily follow that themselves.

This is bad advice all the way around.

>Meaning your refund is paid to you over 12 months instead of Feb-Apr the year after.

No, it means you won't overpay and therefore won't get a refund.

Also, if you DO rely on your refund to pay credit cards, you have poor money management skills and are better off not cutting off the refund. It's an interest-free savings plan, but at least you're saving it, even if it's forced. You'll still run up the same credit card debt because you refuse to live within your means, but now have no windfall to pay off the debt.

You defend this pathetic attempt at a Life Pro Tip by saying you're talking about fast food, but what is this "container" you speak of? You mean a bag? Because fast food wraps "dine-in" and "to go" food much the same way.
