Reply to comment by Plexiglasssmartphone in Does gene editing hold the key to improving mental health? | Research suggests traumatic childhood experiences embed themselves in our brains and put us at risk of mental illness, but epigenetic editing may offer us hope of removing them. by lughnasadh
It can be done, but it's hard. It's not something people can generally just decide to do, even if they work hard. Therapy can be really helpful with this, with the right therapist.
On the other hand, certain traumas are just too much to do that with IMO. I know someone who watched their child get beaten while another guy held a shotgun to her face and threatened to shoot her and the other child she was hiding behind her. That's not even the worst story, it's just an easy one to explain. You don't just get over that level of extreme abuse. Pretty sure she's never going to want to be around a gun ever again.
If this tech can help snip some of that out.... She'd volunteer yesterday.

But it is noticeably less work. Empty it every single time or empty it every 50 times? It's basically maintenance now. Same for a robot that could do laundry. Eventually you have to refill the soap. You don't have to do it every time though, just like once every 100 or however many loads worth of soap you can add at a time.
Robot doesn't mean it needs to be fully automated.

Reply to comment by Moskau50 in Eli5 Why can't we refreeze thawed food? by Pef421-
The danger zone thing is where it kinda gets lost though. For example:
My parents get half a cow each year. Someone mixed some stuff up and put a chunk of the burgers in the fridge instead of the freezer. Well, the fridge was still below 40F (basement fridge is set pretty low) so the meat thawed but didn't hit the danger zone.
The rest of the family still living there were put off by it, so unless he cooked it without them seeing they didn't want it. So he gave me the thawed + refrozen ones. They're just fine.
Since it's just me and my wife, it's hard to get through 8 burgers fast enough. We just don't eat beef like that. Normally when we got a few packs they weren't thawed so we could just break the package in half due to the way it was packaged and thaw that half. If I was sure I could even break that in half and only take out the two we wanted to eat.
Well since these thawed I can't do that at all. They kinda squished together. So a few times now I put them in the fridge until they're thawed enough to break apart (or nearly completely thawed if doing it overnight) and then repacking them in batches of 2 to refreeze.
Two thaws, two refreezes, doesn't matter. Sure they might spoil a little faster if I leave them in the fridge now.... But it doesn't really matter.

Nope, some new ones empty themselves. Sure eventually you have to empty the larger container, but as long as they don't get lost they'll return to the charger, empty, and go back out again when needed. Pretty much fully automated.
Appliances aren't robots though. You don't call a regular vacuum a robot because it picks things up for you. You wouldn't call a washing machine a robot either. It's an appliance.
Now if we had a little rolly guy that would collect dishes, wash them (in a dishwasher + spot cleaning "by hand"), and put them away, THAT'S a robot.
Same for clothes. Assuming you have regular places for you clothes it could grab them from the dirty hamper, wash, fold, and put them away.
Honestly we could probably build a robot to do those things already, we have good enough tech. When it's the same items repeatedly rather than new stuff, pattern recognition is pretty great.

Just ground. When you're talking about breaking something down like meat it's never "grounded". Grounded in reference to a child is correct though.

Fresh ones are often green, they take longer to turn red and it's not worth the time/money to wait. When you pick them the plant grows more so if you wait for them to turn red it's less time for the next pepper.
They're fun to grow.

I hate when people say this. It's dumb, and it's semantics, but it drives me nuts.
You can't start at the tips! What the fuck do you think you're combing? The air?
You need to start an inch or two above the tips. Otherwise there's nothing to comb.

It's hit and miss.
Fun fact: it's because they're doing it wrong. The seeds don't contain any opium. It's in the latex. But commercial processing just squishes the pods to separate the seeds, and it's smashed all over them. They're supposed to wash them but it costs more so..... Nope lol.

I work on those systems. It messes with nothing. They are liars, plain and simple. It integrates with payroll software and requires exactly 0 extra work if you're off. It's actually more work to track and punish you for it.
There's a slight exception sometimes, if you're a full time employee at exactly 40 hours a week, if you get one minute extra that one minute is calculated as overtime. In corporate structures that punish managers for overtime they could be in trouble for a single minute. Still stupid.
