Foster care gives you money from the state. Adoption costs a lot of money and the financial benefit is a tax break (just like any other kid), but the tax break doesn't come close to covering the cost of the child. It's baffling.

This little guy was just a few months older than my son. I could never imagine hurting my own child, and moreover, I don't know what I'd do to someone who did.

Grammar exists in headlines; the two aren't mutually exclusive.

We have bigger problems than Covid if people can be incited to attack police officers over a comment regarding imaginary monsters.
Bombs are real. Fires are real. Zombies don't exist.

Yeah, totally comparable.

I'm curious how long our gestation would be if we gave birth at comparable levels of development.

Iirc, the whole point of restricting marriage was to eliminate familial nepotism & inheritance. A wealthy cardinal, for example, would then be forced to leave his estate to the Vatican instead of a wife or children. Likewise, it was supposed to stop titles being granted to the children of clergy.
Neither of these things worked, of course. A blatant example would be Pope Alexander IV, who had children via a mistress and still had the brass to promote his "bastard" to cardinal. The whole story is fucked up. "The Borgias" is a somewhat sensationalized and easy-to-digest version of events.

About 20 years ago I was walking home from work (was about a mile) and was passing through a parking lot for a K-Mart. A car drove up beside me with the window down. I heard, "hey", from the driver and turned, thinking he was asking for directions. Dude looked like a young Stephen King, naked from the waist down. He was masturbating and began to groan. I ran for the store, had the store manager call the police to escort me home.
(As a weird digression, the manager at first insisted I go to the ATM, take out cash, and get change for the pay phone out front. He didn't relent until I started crying as I did not want to go back outside. Nowadays I'd make a stink about it to the corporate office, but was shy and not confident back then.)
Until today, I haven't thought about that in years.
Regardless of any cultural changes over time, there will always be sick fucks running around and behaving accordingly.

I assumed it was civilians with the word "evacuation". I think soldiers would've been a troop withdrawal convoy.
