I assume the edit is from the downvotes you've received. Has it occurred to you that they're not stemming from their actual belief systems, but the arrogance of the insult?

Iirc, the whole point of restricting marriage was to eliminate familial nepotism & inheritance. A wealthy cardinal, for example, would then be forced to leave his estate to the Vatican instead of a wife or children. Likewise, it was supposed to stop titles being granted to the children of clergy.

Neither of these things worked, of course. A blatant example would be Pope Alexander IV, who had children via a mistress and still had the brass to promote his "bastard" to cardinal. The whole story is fucked up. "The Borgias" is a somewhat sensationalized and easy-to-digest version of events.

About 20 years ago I was walking home from work (was about a mile) and was passing through a parking lot for a K-Mart. A car drove up beside me with the window down. I heard, "hey", from the driver and turned, thinking he was asking for directions. Dude looked like a young Stephen King, naked from the waist down. He was masturbating and began to groan. I ran for the store, had the store manager call the police to escort me home.

(As a weird digression, the manager at first insisted I go to the ATM, take out cash, and get change for the pay phone out front. He didn't relent until I started crying as I did not want to go back outside. Nowadays I'd make a stink about it to the corporate office, but was shy and not confident back then.)

Until today, I haven't thought about that in years.

Regardless of any cultural changes over time, there will always be sick fucks running around and behaving accordingly.
