The Amsterdam fire department was dragging their feet in showing up at the fire. After threats of German officers, they started putting the fire out. They made sure that the paper handwritten records that where rescued out of the building by German soldiers were properly soaked too, making them unreadable. If you would go there today, you could still see the roof profile on the adjacent building. The second floor being lost to the fire, has never been replaced. Sad historical bonus fact: The SD had a full copy of the records stashed in the Hague.

Reply to TIL about Willem Arondeus, a gay painter and artist. When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands he joined the dutch resistance. He participated in the bombing of the Amsterdam public records office to hinder the Nazi German effort to identify Dutch Jews. He was caught and executed soon after his arrest. by Random_German_Name
