Trying out Stella’s today. I was told they have paninis but I’m not seeing them on the menu. Is this a trick?

Edit: Apparently there is a different menu for the non-fancy people. Yay!

Oh absolutely. Growing up, my brother and I came inside when the dinner bell rang. What is catching my attention about the podcast is that it’s not as simple as “kids don’t play outside anymore.” It’s recognizing that there are a huge number of factors outside of our control driving the obesity epidemic. It’s a disease and needs to be treated like any other childhood medical condition.

Timely subject. Today’s NYT The Daily podcast is about the American Academy of Pediatrics recommending really aggressive treatment for obese children, including RX weight loss medication and surgery.

Happy to oblige because I think the situation is pretty funny and I’d be intrigued too. It’s my first time experiencing a ghost/spirit/whatever. I wasn’t a believer before but like, what else am I supposed to do? There’s only so much I can ignore the footsteps going up and down the stairs when my cat is looking directly at the stairs and then back at me like “you hearing this shit?!”

So I assigned Casper a gender because he seems like a mischievous but usually fun guy. He makes a lot of racket in the kitchen, like random sounds. Once it was the sound of someone squeezing a Solo cup. Like, that’s a very distinctive sound unlike old house sounds or thumps. He also knocked a huge clock off the wall and I wasn’t thrilled to sweep up the glass, but that’s the worst he’s done. The bedside table incident this week was the closest to me he’s ever been and had it happened a few years ago, I would have lost my shit. But we’re cool now so I was like “well played, Casper” and rolled over.

The house was built in 1896. A longtime neighbor told me that a loooong time ago it was an unpermitted bar for gay patrons. Other than that lore, I don’t know anything about previous residents. It was a rental before I bought it in 2016.

So yep. That’s the scoop. A woman, her black cat, and a ghost all happily coexisting in Church Hill.

Edit to add: Nice to hear from you friend!!

Is your Oma’s house haunted like mine? This is funny timing but my Casper caused a loud “thump” in the kitchen a few minutes ago. He’d been quiet for weeks but announced his presence twice in the past few days: the “thump” in the kitchen and a loud sound of something falling off my bedside table near my head and hitting the floor. The bedside table one defies reality because there’s nothing on the table but my unscathed journal and a lamp.

>There’s a reason Morrissey makes sure to send out all those happy family cards and photos

One of my friends got 2 calendars on his front porch during the recent primary. It worked on a bunch of people, not to make them vote for him, but to disbelieve the rumors about his marriage being on the rocks. Because who would have the audacity to promote a family man image with this shit going on?

There’s a downside to fully enjoying on a road trip with your family and not being on your phone: I didn’t notice my purse, with said phone, was missing until arriving in Roanoke. Thankfully, some amazing person found my abandoned purse at Sheetz and turned it into the store. 4 extra hours of driving later, I finally got to Roanoke again

u/Orthtopteran - That bear episode was less Goldilocks and more thoracic stomping and chewing. Naturally there’s a Reddit post full of people claiming they’d totally fight a grizzly bear.

Favor please! Go to my Etsy page and click on the wreath you like best. That’s it. Etsy’s algorithm likes clicks and doesn’t like me right now for offering free shipping. https://www.etsy.com/shop/GiftedGrayRVAShop

Here’s the wreath I just made. It is absolutely stunning in person. Got a favorite book you’d like me to buy and turn into art? Message me!

Road trip to Roanoke and looking for a ~1 hour podcast episode. No politics. Lay it on me.

Edit: THANK YOU! The family carpool is blown away by the options. Especially the Tom Hanks of Trees.
