Life tip: when you leave a place, it never feels the same again. It was your home, and now it's not. This is more about you than about DC.

I once read a management book which claimed that do-gooder organizations tend to have more management problems than others, because they think their superior mission absolves them of having to address any sins and shortcomings. Maybe the same is true of people.

One might think you're making this up, but I've actually seen these clowns marching through Adams Morgan on May Day with pictures of Stalin.

Reply to Explaining your DC job when you go home? (Especially if it’s left leaning, policy, NGO, etc) by hushpuppylife
A lot of people here make the grave mistake of starting to believe their work is fascinating to everyone around them. That's as big a mistake here in DC as it is in WV or anywhere else. Also, human beings are very good at detecting any hint of self-aggrandizement or humble bragging, and react badly to such. Ultimately, nobody cares that you spent six months in Ulan Bator helping local collectives become more efficient at managing ruminant droppings. Come up with a one-sentence non-jargony explanation for your job, and be prepared to move on unless people show genuine interest.

that's pretty obvious BS. Popville is a joke as a news source. Usually it's fun to mock the site and its commenters as a relatively harmless haven of hapless urban naïfs, but this seems harmful and clearly intended to stir trouble.

If you have a fitness watch, it likely has training programs already built in that are pretty decent. You also want to make sure you have the right shoes (and right fit) and Fleet Feet is good for advising you. A 5k is very attainable especially if you can already run 30 min... you shouldn't need a coach. Consider using short walk breaks to increase your distance and reduce injury risk (Google run walk run).

Smalldicks also like souped up Civics, Subarus, Mercedes and BMWs. A lot of times it isn't even real engine noise, increasingly these cars electronically generate that noise.

Driver's license suspensions become meaningless if there's no risk to driving with a suspended license. Impoundment would be more effective -- I'd love to see more of that. But reckless driving is an act of violence -- it will always be a matter foremost for law enforcement personnel.

There have been several cases in the last few years of restaurants blaming the city and/or neighborhood for their failure, and these claims are always accompanied by anguished howls from the credulous (usually heavily concentrated amongst the Popville commentariat). But in every case i can think of there was always something else going on.

In the story above, the driver was not fleeing a chase, he was fleeing a traffic stop. He knew he could flee because of the no-chase policy.
I know some people are trying to end police traffic stops altogether, which will be another dangerous step in our descent into rampant criminality.
IcyWillow1193 t1_j2dfls4 wrote
Moving to DC to get away from noise isn't a great idea. You'll trade leaf blowers for much more obnoxious noises, such as every fifth car with a tricked out intentionally loud exhaust and every third car with the bass turned up so high your walls shake. Some DC burbs also have gas leaf blower bans - I would recommend looking at those first.

They all know that chases aren't allowed, and now they know about the officer who was recently convicted of murder. There is every incentive to flee.

If you're going to shill for luxury developers, you at least should ask for a paycheck. With that, you might be able to actually help people.

It's not basic supply and demand principles. It's the real estate version of trickle down economics. We all know how well that worked out.
