It seems like Vermont is really intent on being at the low end of "competitive for the region". Could fix a lot of the work shortages by changing that approach to be towards the higher end. Especially with nurses. Not sure why medical facilities fight raises for staff nurses so hard, but then turn around and pay travelers $4000-$5000 a week like it is nothing. I would imagine the same could be said for teachers. Want the best? Pay the best.

I'm not a teacher, but I am curious. How does teacher pay in Vermont compare to other states? I'm an engineer my wife is a nurse. Have noticed that a lot of local engineer and nursing salaries are very low.

Fellow ex-Michigander. Moved here two years ago. We settled on Essex Town because of the schools and proximity to everything. Vermont is very white, but not northern Michigan kind of white. Our little neighbor is a melting pot. I think it is because it is the "old IBM neighborhood ". Lots of biracial coupes, LGBT couples, and immigrants. I would check out the Essex area. I'm a white dude, so maybe I am missing something. Hope this helps!

Same thing is happening in Southern Michigan. When we sold our house in Michigan, we had 41 walkthroughs and 14 offers in 36 hours. Sold our house for $50,000 over $300,000 list. We paid $224,000 for the place in 2015 and did not do a ton to the place. It listed again last year for $405,000. Oh, and the ground water was polluted with PFAS.
