Since you want to be at the airport by 7, I suggest you leave at around 5 to give you ample travel time in case of any unforseen hurdles.
I'd take the PATH to 33rd and take the LIRR to Jamaica.

I occasionally walk from JSQ towards the waterfront. Takes me an hour down Newark, maybe less, if I don't stop at a store or something.
A great way to kill time and get some cardio exercise.

Depends on where you live and your circumstances...
I live around Journal Square but work in Secaucus. Sometimes the #2 bus is a pain in the ass, so I'd rather drive.
