The car was a 2002. It had a cd player and cassette deck

The fact that my car still ran to then use this adapter was also dark arts

Yeah, when phones used to have aux ports it was a simple plug and play. Then they removed ports, and I had to buy an Aux to USB-C adapter to continue using it. Or in your iPhone's case, Aux to Lightning adapter would work.

I had this adapter in my car for the last 5 years. It was some cheap adapter from a "five and under" store, hence the ridiculously bright coloring. The tape popped out whenever I wasn't using it or when the car was off.
