Here's one for r/selfawarewolves. Fulop used Covid funds to keep taxes artificially low during an election year and now we're paying for it a year later. How's this for front loading? https://www.jerseycitynj.gov/news/pressreleases2020/mayor_s__250_m_funding_plan_fix_school_budget_gap

I wanted him to address Lefrak's influence. Lefrak has been one of, if not the biggest recipient of long term tax abatements. Until very recently the schools were not receiving a penny from the payments that the abated properties paid, that money went directly to the city. The JC schools were then subsidized with state aid. This arrangement came to an end and the city implemented a payroll tax to partially fund the expected shortfall. Lefrak challenged the tax in court 2019 and finally lost this year. I think it's a fair question to challenge a candidate whose main source of funding is the same company's superPAC, also set up in 2019, seemingly in response to the payroll tax. You may feel the answer was sufficient but I do not think having a kid in the system or the other side having more funding negates the obviously benign intentions of Lefrak. I won't be voting for anyone, they are all a shower of shits.

You're attributing it "in major part to the BOE". The increases are practically identical and my point it that there was much wailing and nashing of teeth over the BOE budget from the city and Fulop but now they have done exactly the same thing and blamed the same cause.

Here's the unenforceable article - https://www.insidernj.com/fulop-calls-state-legislators-fix-payroll-tax-loophole/

No you didn't, you blamed the BOE for this.

"Well, clearly the BoE and City don't, since taxes are going up again, allegedly due in major part to the BoE budget."

The payroll tax isn't working because people are refusing to pay it and Fulop has describes it as unworkable. Mack Cali and LeFrak took the city to court over it and lost and then the city asked the BOE to forgive any interest these huge companies accrued, a courtesy not afforded to home owners.

Fulop wanted another reval almost immediately, likely to help out his buddies at Dixon.

"Fulop, in his state of the city address this week, said he plans to put a measure before the council in upcoming weeks to pave the way for a second reval in 2019, one that would readjust assessments after an expected dive in home values from the current reval."

This article does a better job of explaining the increase. The 3rd quarter tax bill had placed an average extra $1200 for schools. The 4th quarter tax bill will see an extra $1160 for the city. If you remember the 3rd quarter tax bills were resent so Fulop could add a letter blaming the BOE for the increase. I doubt we will now see a letter blaming Fulop or the council for this one.

Explain further. As far as I know the state was subsidizing our school taxes with state aid at a disproportionate level. It was the removal of that aid, which was phased out over a few years, that led to the recent third quarter increase. The municipal budget, which we are discussing here, is entirely separate.

I've yet to see anyone dispute the material facts here. It doesn't change the fact that somebody elected to represent the people of Jersey City left one of those people for dead. That alone disqualifies her for her position, the fact that this incident brought to light other incidents of both bad behavior and special treatment is just icing on a particularly repugnant cake.
