I disagree because I believe that the traffic calming efforts have made us safer from the average driver. You can feel the difference from even five years ago. I don't think that's a small accomplishment.

I am guessing most people on here will be snarky but setting ambitious goals for public safety is good and changing course when things aren't working is also good. For me, what makes the pedestrian experience unsafe are drivers who aren't even close to following the rules of the road; the infrastructure investments, by and large, have been the right ones.

Delete all the addition you did for people under the age of 18. They all ride free.

Every kid rides free, which is why the conversation is silly. Do all the math you want, it adds up to $0 for Metro’s budget

If every single DC student rode Metro to and from school every school day and skipped every fare, it wouldn’t come even close to that number

Yes, squeezing an extra eight bucks out of those kids would definitely solve the $146 million budget shortfall
Pipes_of_Pan t1_iu5ditb wrote
A lot of people in here think that kids (who ride free anyway) jumping turnstiles is why there is a $146+ million budget shortfall. Y'all think there have been like 70 MILLION free rides!?

Most likely the government signed them up because they qualify through their school.

Sure and I’m very glad you got care but 1) there was a bed for y’all at one of the hospitals mentioned in this article and 2) these headlines pop up every year around this time. Kids get sick in the fall! Hospitals prepare properly for this and the media sensationalizes the situation.

…do you think that children are only allowed to go to children’s hospitals…? Do you think hospitals don’t prepare for flu season…?

For anyone following this hysterical person’s hissy fit, the answer is ONE hospital and their quote about it was pretty chill but this bozo is losing their mind over it

Sure, but we're also talking about "multiple hospitals" being three - one in DC, one in Fairfax and one in Baltimore. I am just saying that these articles come out every year when kiddos are getting sick and it does not mean that there is a crisis situation.

I understand your perspective but I promise you that some parents take their kids to the hospital for literally anything. I myself have received a few ibuprofen-and-rest prescriptions. I just don't see hospitals being busy during cold and flu season as something to be panicking about.

Whenever people bring up these headlines, I remind people that many, many parents take their children to the hospital with literally any cough or fever. No shade because I know it's scary when your kiddo is sick but for most people who have RSV, it's just a cold. This is just the time of year when people get fevers and colds.

Right, but the enforcement of police chases through the city is dangerous for pedestrians, too. Enforcement is hard in the moment
