My family has lived here for over a 100 years. Guess it works. That said, I've lived in 11 states. It's either Newporr or Providence I like. Small cities are best. In NE Providence is the best of the bunch.

Once you know your route, it's OK. There are streets that are nutty, but there are side roads that are not. I just ride where there is less traffic and get more exercise.

I think taverns as a name is from long ago. Most old bars were taverns. If you were traveling on a horse, you'd drink, eat, and sleep( usually upstairs or in an out building). So there were lots of them. Even in the cities you could do the same. As for the name bar, I have no clue.

A number of old taverns named bars in New England are the remnant of thar era.

LA fitness, prov and Pawtucket line on North Main st. The best part you can swim basically all the time. Whereas with others such as the YMCA, you only have specific slots of time to swim. I think it opens at 5am and during week closes at 10pm. It's never really crowded. At most, I may wait 20 minutes to grab a lane, which is rare.

Brown, CCRI in Lincoln and RIC have pools, Brown has the best, but time slots are limited, and Brown is really pricey.

Also, in the late spring people start preparing for the bay swim. You may ask around on it, but there was a group that swam all the time in Jamestown to get ready at potters cove. May be other groups too.

First night was chosen but some later it was some change, legal or something, and it became bright night. I wasn't involved then. Wish I had more info for you.

I was part of the group that started it. Lots of art, fireworks, it was a blast. Miss it. It was started by artists and we had a mayor ( Cianci) who just did everything to promote the city.
