Did Google tell you that? I bet it did.

Google should also tell you how easily end grain tears right the fuck out which is why you don't make end grain joints and don't put screws into end grain.

I see I'm up against the Googlers tonight. Y'all have a good weekend, I'm gonna go turn some maple bowls.

I am well aware how strong modern wood glues are but end grain joints are weaker than shit. I make money woodworking, I've seen enough "idiot customer requests" that I knew would have failed joints that this idiot woodworker thought, again, a warning that they would fail would mean the customer wouldn't come back at me as though it was my fault.

How much do you feel like spending?

Where i live i can get 4x8 sheets of 5mm plywood "underlayment" for $13 per and they'd be super easy to put up with a brad nailer or castle stapler and from there you could paint 'em. Or get fancy and add some battens to cover the seams then stain it all.

...long ago a cat wrecked the cord for my $100 Sony studio 'phones and I attempted to repair the wires.

I had 2 years of electronics in high school and another 2 in college, both of which had a lot of practical training - in other words I'm no stranger to soldering.

I ended up buying a new cord for it that wasn't a hell of a lot less than a brand new pair.

You would need to get your hands on a soldering iron but be aware that the wires in earbuds, and even expensive regular headphones, is super, super thing and a real pain in the neck to deal with.

I wouldn't worry too much about the finish on the wood flooring - you're going to have to strip it and refinish it anyhow.

Also, don't get too awful excited about the asbestos. It's not the 'plutonium' so many people think it is and a couple accidental instances of inhaling some won't give you lung cancer, and sounds like you have the PPE covered. Chew on this: A lot of aftermarket brake pads still have asbestos.
