We've gone snowboarding a few times this year and it's been great. It's cold enough for the man-made snow, but not so bitter cold that you're miserable while you're out there. If it was any warmer, though, it would be totally wrecked.

Definitely visit the RISD museum. Also walk on the East Bay bikepath. A walk around Brown campus and Thayer St. can be fun. I also second the side trip to Newport and/or the Green Animals estate in Portsmouth. Blithewald in Bristol is gorgeous in the spring as well - and, they do an afternoon tea - be sure to make a reservation if you're doing this.

I saw Les Mis at PPAC last month. It's a gorgeous theater and it was a great show! Providence has an incredible arts scene for a small city.

Also, we have high taxes, but we also have a very high standard of living and first-rate social services compared to other parts of the US. We're getting what we're paying for, with the possible exception of public transportation.

I think your best bet is West Roxbury. In the city, but you'll save on commuting, which is a lot of time and/or money in metro Boston, no matter how you cut it. West Rox is not far from Longwood medical center. Lots of great outdoor space. Some 3bd houses for rent in your price range and a wide variety of great schools, especially if you're willing to pay for private.

I second the RISD museum - it's a world-class museum. That whole part of Providence where the Brown and RISD campuses are is very artsy and cool.
Definitely see some of the beaches and do some coastal hiking. Either on the East Bay Bike path or at one of the wildlife preserves - Ninigret or Point Judith - there are many.
Newport is amazing. The Breakers is probably the most spectacular, but they're all impressive. Newport itself has a lot to do - dining, window shopping, etc.
Rhode Island also has some pretty, New England-y spots like Wickford and Westerly. They can be fun to walk around and have lunch.

1.) RISD & Brown - the East Side is one of the coolest, artsy-est places on earth.
2.) The beaches are some of the most beautiful (those rich-types who settled in Newport for the summer could have gone anywhere).
3.) Love of the outdoors and the environment - Save the Bay, RI Audubon, the wildlife refuges, the bike paths, all the local farms - there's just so much to get out and do!

My experience with parents is that they avoid having their child put on an IEP if at all possible, even when it's not in the child's best interest. They don't want their child labeled and they don't want to admit there's a problem.
SharpCookie232 t1_j0oarx9 wrote
This is a very difficult time in public education and Rhode Island is really struggling. You might want to settle in MA or go private if you can. Best of luck.

Knowing what supports a child needs doesn't cripple the learning experience. Underfunding and the resulting understaffing cripple the system.
