You need a balance of light and dark between your fiction and reality. When life ventures too far in either direction, you compensate with fiction.

I had a cat named Sirius once. Sirius Black, because he was a black cat, and the other cat we had was "Pesky Pixie Pesternomi" or Pixie for short.

Sometimes you need to just go sit on your porch or rough equivalent and watch the clouds for a bit. Find a nice grassy area, maybe a park, lie down, and watch.
It's very quieting.
