Hey not to get too macabre but I feel it my duty to tell my fellow crazy audio people to have a will and designate who the equipment goes to. I say this from a place of caring and experience with in-fighting over a lack of a will when someone in my family passed. Since audio means a lot to you, be sure it goes people who wold care enough about these things in the off-chance of something happening to you.

Happy listening!

All forums have their bias (just like news sources) so separating the wheat from the chaff is what you need to do. Head-Fi has better discussions on specific headphones than Reddit given its typical forum layout. But that means it does have more audiophile woo woo like this. SBAF, Reddit, and ASR have their drawbacks too.

FWIW I EQ the LCD-5 and have multiple profiles depending on what mood I’m in. So I am a big fan of EQ. I’m more trying to meme the people that believe you can EQ a HD660 into a LCD-5 (believe me I have tried).

And no doubt here! Got them 9 months and they eliminated my desire for other headphones because when EQ’d they’re perfect for me. Happy listening and I hope you get a chance to listen to a pair one day!

"inverted snobbery" is the term you're looking for. And for the most part I agree. A lot of people seem to think confirmation bias only exists at the expensive end of audio but it works both ways.

And there are some phenomenal headphones that are 80% of what the flagships do for an order of magnitude less in cost. There's a reason I keep 660s and DT1990s around.

Just as a FYI I agree with you. You can't EQ a Chu into a LCD-5 or HE-1. This meme format represents progressively stupider remarks which is mimicked by the person becoming more of a clown.

No worries- memes aren't the best way to communicate complex ideas haha.

That's a pretty accurate statement. Though there are many here that would disagree with my subjective interpretation of headphones. But listening back to back with the HD660 and LCD-5 (both have a pretty similar frequency response - LCD-5 has more 3kHz and doesn't roll off in the bass) only one of these headphones sound compressed when metal gets intense. Compressed meaning no separation between sounds and notes e.g. drum solo in 2:40 in Vicarious by Tool. It sounds like one drum in the 660 while on the 5 it's 4 different drums in different places and depth in the soundstage.

I've heard $10k speakers that also sound compressed so it's not exclusive to headphones.

Happy cakeday! The Chu didn't hurt me haha. This is just a meme in response to people with the belief that you can EQ anything to make it sound like a better headphone. If you EQ the Chu to an HE-1, then it sounds as good as the HE-1, right?

Nice- I have the 1990s with velour pads and they were my daily driver for a longtime. I still use them for video games most of the time. They’re also the most comfortable headphone I own (but this might not be the case with you). I’ll look into the passive filters!

Building a speaker is next on my to-do list! Glad to hear you got some great results. What did you use for the crossover? There’s a place here in the US called PartsExpress that has most of the DIY audio equipment for sale.

It’s funny. I remember a thread last week where someone was complaining about not enough bass in Harman. Discontinuities like this make me think there will never be the one true target curve.

Mid treble harman messes with me because I’m a little bitch when it comes to treble. I love dark headphones.

I’d be interested in a blind test for sure of different headphones but it’d kind of tough amongst headphone users because of the pad feeling i.e. you can tell a more expensive headphone by a pad like if it has leather on it. So it’d have to be a true true blind test amongst inexperienced headphone users.

But there’s a difference in the resolution between my 660s, DT1990s, and LCD-5. And I hope you get to experience it one day. I’ve heard a lot of speaker systems too and there’s only been one that had better acoustical resolution than the 5. And that system was in a perfectly treated room with near optimal dimensions.

I think that’s more of a misnomer in audiophilia in general. I really am trying to get more information about where “resolution” comes from. Because on my experience, brightness and/or peaky treble does not result in detail.

I opened a thread on ASR about it last weak but haven’t gotten much traction on understanding wtf resolution is
