I mean yeah those articles state the obvious fact that -30 windchill /= -30 weather. It doesn't work great as an exact number. However when temperatures get into extreme lows and you add wind in obviously chances of frostbite and shit are higher.

Theres a reason why ski areas like jay are closing. They normally don't close in -20 weather. its normally cold af up there. But also -20 days here are usually still. Tomorrow is going to be insanely windy and they decided to preemptively close. Im sure they used a more scientific metric than wind chill to gauge the closing. But its much easier to say "hey -40 wind chill tomorrow we wont open"

Wind chill is a measurement of about how quickly the weather will kill you. It kinda matters a bit. We've never quite gotten a day in vt this cold while simultaneously having this high wind. Its definitely anomalous weather.

Most ski areas have elected to shut down for example. With winds of 50mph the woods dont really protect you

Yeah this is one of the real concerns about tomorrow night. Despite the fact a lot of people are saying wind chill isnt real and this is a nothing burger. The wind doesn't necessarily care. When its really windy and cold it will kill you faster than just cold and there are plenty of people without shelter.

It does look like the state is trying to do something this weekend to help. I do urge people without heat or shelter to call 211.

Eh dont listen to them. Most vermonters are actively doing something to prepare for it. School got canceled Its actually pretty cold for VT. people on this sub are just playing the whole tough vermonter character.

Air temps are around -20 which isn't really fuck around weather.

Its actually pretty severe as far as VT weather goes. Its not really going to be one of those sunny still below zero days we are used to. Its going to be more insane winds and ridiculously low wind chill factors that can give you frostbite within minutes. School is already closed for most of the state. Its not really weather to fuck around in.

Yeah something people dont realize is a lot of big cities on the American west are built right at the foot of huge mountain ranges. People tend to get themselves onto shit because there will be expanses of wilderness the size of a small European countries that are easily accessible from a trailhead in a realitivley suburban area.

It will be a warm summer day at the trailhead but once you pop over the first ridge it will be a blizzard. The place where the donner party happend. One of the snowiest places in the usa. Is like just over an hour from Sacramento

The Angeles national forest is in the mountains and the mountains tend to block cell service. LA is actually really interesting because its basically city. And then wilderness immediately next to it. Go over the first mountain ridge and into federally protected nature reserve and there will be no towers on the other side.

Keep in mind this isn't just like a tiny hiking area. Its a very large desolate mountain range

I live in a city in northern new england and an hour drive could easily bring me to some inhospitable wilderness with no cell service.

This reads like an add. Keep in mind you would have to cut down all trees in a huge radius. Not live on a mountain side. And the house doesn't have a furnace but it does have a heat pump. Like almost all new construction. This really just seems like a modern construction home with a few improvements tacked on to make it slightly more efficient. However I wonder if the gains from doing this offset the utility costs at all. It cant be cheap to build 15" thick walls.

Even the article states this is best for appartment buildings and condos.

Thats fair. I didn't consider the route 100 side. When I do the national forest im usually camping along the LT and I access it from the west side. There really isnt anywhere near a town to boondok near a town except for some parcels near Ripton and breadloaf. But honestly I get really bad vibes from those places. Weird shit goes down there. And other than national forests everything in vt is slowly getting regulated due to popularity. Almost no dispursed camping. Only primitive with a 3 night limit on state land.
