Take a course at international mountain equipment first. Rope handling, ice and terrain knowledge, weather knowledge, equipment familiarization, and the general climbing knowledge is worth it.

A traffic jam in my area is three cars at a stop sign.

I can bring my telescope out on my deck and see Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars on most clear nights.

There’s a huge swath of woods for exploring right out back.

We’re attractive enough as a place to live that people are actively moving here instead of fleeing for economic opportunity, so it gives me hope that my kids will stick around.

I also work part time in Philly, and I miss the good art, music, and culture sites that bigger cities have when I’m home in Maine. But for food? I haven’t found a serious competitor to Portland, yet.

Cold kills. Don’t head into the woods without an experienced hiking/fat biking/xc skiing buddy. I think the white mountains are at about 22 hiker deaths this year, so far. The most recent were deaths due to exposure/hypothermia because of poor preparation and catastrophic inexperience.

We get 7-8 hours on an 8kw generator under average load. But we have it running a large household, so I’d imagine most would get more time. We typically run for 1 on 2 off during the day if we suspect a longer outage to conserve fuel, and then leave it on all night.
