nickerson gets used quite extensively and i think the main goal of the city here is to get a private entity to pay for repairs to government property

nye is pretty awful here and the bars are packed with amateurs. never saw more bar fights and ambulances for alcohol poisoning than i did going to bars on nye in my early 20s
youre paying a minimum of $25-50 to enter even the dingiest dive bar and getting home is a nightmare with lyft/uber prices

theres currently a huge storm making its way across the country that doesnt just impact here, they are canceling flights by the hundreds in the midwest and the south, all of those people need to be rebooked which results in a cascading effect. if you can get out asap, even in less than ideal conditions, its far better than waiting with everyone else

its almost impossible for government agencies to keep up with the benefits and salary of private tech companies
even with the relative “safety” of working for a government entity, you can make far more in the private sector and government salaries are never going to be able to pay as much

if you like to save and can live only on the basics why would you move to a city? let alone a city that costs as much as this one
you can live pretty comfortably on 130k, but if youre intent on saving youre not going to take much advantage of what the city offers.
take into account we have the highest electric bills on average in the country and some of the highest gasoline/natural gas costs in the country and its really not a great place to save

worth noting the banshee is very small and people show up very early
if youre not a fan of standing the entire game and being packed like sardines for a 1pm soccer game, there are better places

i dont think thats a great comparison, we dont treat police like other jobs for good reason, having a “reserve” of police in the city to get to work quickly in the event of a major event is a practical reason for requiring city residency
plus most police officers in the city are from here and went to school here and it helps humanize the police to the community and vice versa. seeing off duty cops at their kids sports events, involved in the community outside of work and so on is an important part of not creating an us vs them culture
