I'd add Spielberg to the list too. Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List.
All completely different, but they're near perfect

The superhero genre wasn't nearly as big in the 80s. The Christopher Reeve Superman movies were big, but there wasn't anything comparable to the MCU today. Nobody took Batman seriously until the Tim Burton films

Anything that's very depressing or traumatic.
There are certain scenes in Requiem for a Dream, Come and See, American History X etc. that make me not want to rewatch
Or stuff like Uncut Gems. Am I in the mood to be stressed out? Nah.

Yeah. He compares them to theme parks, which seems fair to me. I just don't like the superhero aesthetic. I can't make myself interested in them. Probably the main exceptions being Joker (doesn't feel superhero) and Guardians of the Galaxy (focuses a lot on comedy)

Velma is basically like they asked right wingers what they think "woke" media is like and then they made that show. It almost feels patronizing/insulting to those with progressive ideals and obviously right wingers won't watch it, so it's a show for no one

I just mentioned uncut gems in another thread. You never get a breath the whole movie, so it kinda of keeps you from zoning out. Pretty stressful watch though

Almost all of those 80s action films had non-stop absurdly over the top displays of strength. All of Commando probably works, but you could probably pick any Arnold film from that era

I've heard Joker compared to Taxi Driver too. Also De Niro/Scorsese

Somebody just posted that famous scene from Network saying they were surprised by how relevant it was. It's just a universal, evergreen sentiment about living in western society

Reno 911 is underrated. I think it's one of the funniest shows ever. That and Curb Your Enthusiasm are both half-scripted, half-improv, and they're both among the funniest shows on TV

I know this is about TV shows, but Joker doesn't even feel like a superhero movie. Just an interesting psychological thriller

Shawshank has the better script and is a better movie in my opinion. Hanks is the better actor.

I like that they remove ambient noise too. You're a lot less likely to have issues with catching quiet dialogue.

The Expanse is fun, but it's pretty involved. It takes some commitment to follow the plot and a lot of people don't make it past the first few episodes. Other people go all-in.

You can't compare the Sopranos and GoT. They're probably my two favorite TV shows, but it's like they're not even playing the same game.
cbbuntz t1_j6na4sd wrote
I could probably think of a lot more in the other direction. Novels are usually too much plot for a standard length movie.
