I’m from Michigan originally. I saw it as mostly mundane as well. But then one time I was backpacking in the Porkies and we got to a beach and were sweaty. We took of our packs and stripped down to our shorts and waded in and I remember diving below the surface. The water like a chilled drink. Crystal clear so I could see the rocks. I’d been reading The Living Great Lakes and maybe that influenced me but it was just magical. I was a heartbeat away from graduating from MSU and getting married and getting my first real job. It was like this moment of childlike wonder before adult life began.

Almost 20 years ago now, my friends and I rented a house near there. It was 15 of us. Half were already married, half single. Spouses were in attendance. It was a great trip. But the day I remember most was the day we spent just goofing off on the beach near there. We were all approaching 30 but that day we acted like kids, swam in the surf, laid on the sand in a beautiful place. We’d all started careers but none had started their families yet. Today we all have kids and are busy. That day and that place will always be one of the last carefree times before life takes over.

This looks like someone gave Grimace the Joker gritty origin story treatment. I can almost hear the double slow cover version of a song in a minor key to make it sound spooky.

“Two all beef patties….”

(Grimace voiceover) Ronald never appreciated me…

“Special sauce, lettuce cheese …”

Maybe he’ll see things a bit different now.

“Pickle, onions ….”

Narrator voice: Grimace isn’t lovin it, anymore.
