Reply to comment by blackwillowspy in Chipotle to pay former Augusta workers $240,000 for breaching labor laws by benpinette
I didn't "blame" anybody - re-read my very first sentence.
I'm asking why - during a time when every single business on the planet was desperate for help and paying just as much as (if not more than) the clowns at Chipotle were paying their employees - why these employees thought continuing to work there despite the deplorable conditions was their best option.
I mean, I don't know about you and your financial life, but if I'm at ANY job where I'm not getting paid on time or at all, I'm outta there real fast. At the end of the day, I need to work to get paid. I'm not doing it out of the goodness of my heart.
Then you add on those other conditions that were reported that made working there "less than ideal", and for me it just doesn't add up. I'm glad the workers got compensation for their troubles, but now tell us what was REALLY going on there, why it was such an amazing place to work under those conditions I stated above. THAT's what I'm really interested to find out and will continue to ask. It makes zero sense to me.
Edit to add: And don't get me wrong, I'm not at all anti-union - I have a public sector union job and am a paying member of the union as a matter of fact - and I 100% support the rights of these workers to unionize and they deserve every cent of compensation they can get from Chipotle for having gone through this entire ordeal.
None of that changes the fact that there were very strange things happening here, WAY before the union-busting tactics.

So I’ll first say that it sure beats “nothing”, so good for the workers.
But maybe someday it’ll come out why the workers at this location were so excited to work for a place that, according to reports:
-Had inept management on many levels
-wasn’t paying workers on time (or at all?)
-Had severe safety issues like gas leaks in the kitchen
-Was always short-staffed, forcing employees to work WAY more than their scheduled hours
I mean, what exactly was the draw of working there anyway? Were they forced beyond their own free will?
Something just does not add up.

So we should just ignore “optimal” and aim for “convenient”?

I'm loving all the "it was good enough for me, it's good enough for my kids" comments here.
Like yeah, just because we all suffered through the wrong thing means our kids should too? If we have the opportunity to treat our kids better than we were, we should take it. Every.single.damn.time.

I’m so sorry that “single factor” happens to be the most important one - kids actually learning things. How inconvenient, I know.

It shouldn't be the "tail wagging the dog" though - sports shouldn't be the primary concern in this issue, it should be what is ideal for students to learn, because that's what they go to school to do in the first place.

Facts - I am aware of a high school student from Kennebec County who is supremely talented in basketball (and also happens to be very tall, so that helps), but instead of playing at their "home" school, they're now going to an academy a couple hours away in order to get noticed/recruited/scouted/etc.
There is most certainly a classist system in high school athletics. Only those who can afford to go do things to get noticed will actually get noticed. Everyone else doesn't have a chance.

And officiating too, which is a whole other discussion. There are official shortages in many places also.

Way too common. We all have our moments where we might forget once, but I swear I see the same cars with only the DRLs on every morning, even if it's cloudy/dark, raining, snowing, whatever, they NEVER turn their actual headlights on. Drives me absolutely mad.

My 2011 Kia Soul I bought brand new, and now it has 249,000+ miles on it. Best damn car I’ve ever owned, and it’s not even close.
Kia used to be terrible, but they’ve improved greatly.

If it goes via Rockland then maybe. Extremely slim chance it goes via Augusta, since the railroad bridge over route 24 in Richmond has been completely removed (initially they removed just the actual bridge itself, but more recently they removed the side supports for it too, which pretty much tells me there's a near-zero chance it ever comes back).

Agreed with most of the comments, Hannaford will probably be cheaper overall unless you catch amazing deals at Shaws. The checkout lines at Shaws are brutal though and the ones I frequent have no self-checkouts.
And another vote for Market Basket, all of zMaine needs one ASAP.

Very common for all inspection places, not even just dealerships. It's 95% a money-making scheme for the dealership/garage, and 5% for actual safety.
I would go to a local mechanic and not a dealership, at least you'd have a higher chance of them being honest with you about what it actually NEEDS for inspection (and if you say roughly where you're located, you might get some recommendations here).

I do realize that you basically spammed this all over Reddit (for some reason), so responding might be the functional equivalent of talking to the wall, but 99% of what you posted does absolutely nothing for my situation.
I vote early by absentee EVERY SINGLE ELECTION, yet I get mailers and such all the way to election day every year.
I'm not going to cancel my voter registration and re-register every year, that just seems like a ridiculous waste of time compared to just putting the mailers through the shredder. And this still wouldn't solve my problem in this thread.
The only sort of "confidential" program Maine has is for "victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking or human trafficking and minor victims of kidnapping by authorizing the use of designated addresses for such victims". Doesn't apply to me.
I've MLNA'd the previous owners' mail before. Several times for the immediate previous owners, and at least twice for the owners before them.

But all this garbage with Chipotle was happening during the pandemic, when businesses WERE actually hiring people off the street because they desperately needed the help. At that time, you could have pretty much walked in to anywhere you wanted to work (and not just fast food places or the like) and they'd hire you in an instant. I'm talking 2020 and 2021, possibly even the beginning of 2022.
Thankfully I'm in a job where I don't need to worry about wanting to apply for another one, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that what you described is happening right now. It wasn't when the bad conditions at Chipotle started.
