Howdy,

I (gay guy, 40) moved here from south Florida (where I was raised) when I was 30 and have happily called it home ever since.

Pretty strong, small LGBTQ community here with some great organizations for meeting others, volunteering, and playing sports. The overall population is pretty accepting, except for parts of Hanover and Chesterfield and further out in the rural areas.

There are lots of pride flags and ally/safe businesses and venues, as well. Our organized Pride event is in September instead of June because June is just the worst for outdoor events.

Found my now-husband on the apps within a few months of moving here but we didn’t meet until a year after that.

My sister has since moved here from Florida and she lives closer to downtown than I do (in the suburbs).

We’re pretty open to different people of different cultures and ethnicities, though that may vary in size of the community depending on the ethnicity.

Lots of great food options among bad food options, but we’re still limited in terms of what you’d find in the DC area.

Internet is pretty reliable and fast if you find a place where Verizon FiOS is, otherwise Comcast is expectedly “ok.”

Since you said you’re in NoVA, there will be some people who suggest you’ll hate it here and to stay up there. Take that with a grain of salt because some folk are just extra salty on people moving to RVA.

Since you can work remotely, why not come on down on Amtrak and spend a few days in the city to look around?

It was hilarious how random the comments would be, too.

Dude would post the most bizarre, depressing hot takes about trailers and referring to people he’s never met (sometimes making it sound like it was his own children) in accidents on things like announcing the birth of someone’s child or a community event.

Respect for being passionate about a public safety issue, but cringe on just plastering the comment section on completely unrelated stories.

Here's a distinguished (featured) student essay featured by VCCS titled "The Abandonment and Neglect of Hunting Dogs" that mentions cases from Virginia and North Carolina.

The issue doesn't seem to be common but it does occur and is primarily due to the hunter's inability or lack of desire to feed dogs off-season when they're struggling to feed themselves.

I haven't seen Sunday's episode yet but was aware of what was likely going to happen based on knowing how the game went

In the game, you only encounter a specific character in a few seconds of screen time and a few comments. Once they announced they cast someone for the series, and that the character is mentioned in advance in Episode 2 (which didn't happen in the game), I had a feeling they were going to add a good bit of backstory to make the outcome far more impactful.

My husband and I usually watch this on Mondays after dinner so we can have a good amount of eye bleach after to cheer us up. Yesterday was a long work day for him so we put it off to tonight, but he's going to trivia night tonight and will get home later. So, tomorrow night, maybe.

Assuming "tn" meant "tonight"

At least back from where I'm from in Fort Lauderdale, there were a lot of car shows on Friday nights and a few Saturday mornings. Fright nights tended to be the younger crowd with hydraulics and lighting and stereos (usually at a Costco or Walmart lot) and Saturday mornings were the classic cars with gorgeous iridescent paint jobs 😍

The same seemed to be the case in Atlanta and in LA. I wonder if it's just a common Friday night/Saturday morning thing across the country?

Feel better!

And yeah, I hear you on that last part. I just don't want to watch it tonight. A post-apocalyptic inescapable fungi infection storyline doesn't give me nightmares but I'm sure that video would if I saw it hours before I go to sleep. :(

Def am! It's really neat seeing scenes that are 100% picture-perfect duplicates between the game and the show. The amount of work they put into some of the show's sets that are only seen that one time on screen is incredible.

Also enjoying seeing some of the subtle—and some huge—differences they made for the show and it's getting me to think about things a bit differently for the game.

I'd be playing FO4 tonight if it wasn't for the fact that no matter what, I can't actually make it through the Goodneighbor part of the story without the game constantly crashing on me. Without mods, with mods, various angles of approaching the city, on PS4 or PS5 (with the PS4 game), no matter what character or save file. It's driving me absolutely mad!

I'm looking forward to the next-gen update they're releasing for free sometime this year, though. But if they haven't fixed whatever bug that is in the new update, I might be swearing off FO4 forever.

Also, I'm very sorry to hear about your cat. My dog, who we said goodbye to August 2021, absolutely loved pizza crust. She'd smell it before a delivery person got to the front door, and she'd be able to tell if we were taking a frozen pizza out from the freezer just by the sound. She wouldn't react to any other box we took out of it. It was uncanny! Her last meal during her "going away party" was unlimited pizza crust. She had a good night 🥹

Oh, this is my third play-through. The new version for PS5 feels like a brand new game even though it’s the same game I’ve already played before.

Naughty Dog is my favorite game studio. Between Uncharted and TLOU, they’re largely the reason why I got my PS3 and PS4.

It’s a fantastic adaptation of the game. The casting and production so far nails it!

I played it when it originally came out for PS3, then the remaster for PS4, and now this rebuilt (and gorgeous) version for PS5.

The second game is heavy AF. I can’t wait to see how they adapt it for TV—assuming it’s renewed and gets to that point. It sounds all-but certain it’ll be renewed, though.

Yesterday, Henrico County Public Schools posted a "Yay of the Day" picture yesterday with a teacher from Highland Springs School who was wearing a "protect trans kids" shirt.

As we can predict, several commenters were livid. They dragged their BS religious excuses into it and said that HCPS was grooming children. It's "against their religion" to refer to a child in a gender that they weren't born with, one said.

They can't point to a Bible verse that even says that, unless they're going as literal to call it a "lie," but they'll sure as hell make it sound like it's in there.

You got it in the last part.

To them, simply acknowledging the statement to “protect trans kids” is effectively “shoving sexuality down their throats” and “turning” them trans. Just by teaching about those differences or discussing it is, apparently, “grooming” them.

It’s absolute nonsense, but you really can’t talk sense into someone who believes that stuff to begin with.

I was taught to pray the gay away. All that taught me was to hate myself for 10 years and pretend to be straight when I clearly wasn’t.

Edit: a word

I'm hoping for snow at some point this winter. At least make it feel like this cold weather is worth it so I can make snowballs or a snow person or sled at least once this season.

But, so far, 2/10 does not give me hope that we'll see it next week.

I wondered the same, but as far as I can tell, medical marijuana is essentially considered the same as regular marijuana once it's purchased and taken out of the store.

IIRC, the "prescription" definition for medical marijuana was just a way to work it into the then-state regulated Board of Pharmacy portion of getting a license. Since the state subsequently dropped the requirement of a patient registering with the state to get a card from them, I don't think it'd be the same as giving someone your prescribed medication from a regular pharmacy.

gLeaf, the licensed dispensary here in RVA with a few locations, does deliver but only if you're already an established patient with them. They'll require you visit them in person first.

I'm fairly certain they only accept patients that have a valid letter of authorization from a physician here in Virginia and do not accept out-of-state letters/medical marijuana licenses.

You can, legally, have someone gift you some of their personal products as long as it's not a part of a financial transaction or exchange of goods/services. Meaning, I'm fairly sure you can have a friend buy some from gLeaf, and then gift it to you.

Hopefully the VA GOP stops blocking progress and finally passes legal retail recreational sales here in the state soon.
